Prince VS Santana

Sorry for my lack of articulation here but ...

Santana is a fantastic guitarist,Prince is said to be a
huge fan.But has Prince eclipsed Santana as a guitarist? Personally I would have to say so... Your thoughts???

Much love yes Pochacco

I don't think he has "eclipsed" Santana... but I would just die to have the two of them onstage armed with their favorite guitars in a duel!!!

biggrin

My ears would be in heaven.

disbelief YOu must be crazy! disbelief

SANTANA plays one note and everybody knows who it is. Nobody phrase like Carlos! NOBODY! headbang

Prince plays a run and they smile and say "Yeah that's damn good! Uhhh, Who's that?" confuse

Bottom-line: a unique indiviual voice is always superior to a guy who sounds like his influences. sheep

(watch this become another "Prince is the greatest Guitarist" thread...ho-hum zzz )

Santana is a lot like Prince, but why did RAVE UN2 (just went gold) bomb when Carlos' album of the same type was a HUGE HIT? Hmm... Obviously its not star power.
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

watchthemfall. nor was it because of a lack of guitar ability on prince part. that has nothing 2 do with sells. if prince music was aired like jaz z or nelly he would sell like corn flakes. u know the dealee on that dont u.

I hate bullshit discussions like this. I think Prince's use of guitar is far more appealing. And please don't tell me that "The Undertaker" is nothing more than a 'run'.

You know...I saw Santana a few nites ago at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. And I LOVE Santana. As I sat there and listened to the concert, I was a bit dismayed. His guitar playing was flawless as usual, but it didn't seem to have that "thing" anymore. I'm not sure what that "thing" is, but I only heard a few notes of it that made me wanna stand up and praise the Heavens for people like Santana. Then, halfway thru the set, I started thinking, "who is the better player, Santana or Prince?" Well, I came to the conslusion that in my mind, I can't make up my mind. But I do know that whatever Prince does, he seems to make his guitar speak, actually elicit emotion from it. I just didn't hear that at the Santana concert. Maybe it was because his playing was overshadowed by singers singing those damned tired hits from Supernatural, or the very extended (but nice) solos he gave to the drummer and percussionists. For real, in my opinion, many of the songs could have been any good guitar player playing, and you wouldn't hvae known the difference. In fact, a leftie guitarist with a green Strat came up on stage at one point...looked akward as hell, but could really play. At one point when they were both playing, I couldn't tell who was playing what. He had Santana's tone down to a tee.
When I hear Prince play, he always manages to make me feel something that I'll be damned if I can explain. Santana didn't. Maybe someone can help me out here.

Prince stated on one of the ONA bootlegs that Santana played the guitar solo on Joy in Repetition a few weeks previously and out of respect he put his guitar down.

that tells a story in itself.

I'm a Prince fan, not particularly into Santana, but i'm not kidding myself.

Santana is better.

i agree that they don't need to compete, but I saw Santana play side by side with Prince in the last DC US concert from ONA. and Prince blew Santana away that evening, santana is good, but he bores me. just my opinion though, I certanily don't have the musical knowledge to really compare them.

Carlos got Him Easily IMHO.Prince has always been about Battles with His Music.Carlos has tones.Prince Is Really Good, but something about Carlos giving you a Towering Guitar Solo just has a Feeling&Vibe that I can't explain.like P-Funk Said when Carlos Plays you really remember it.Prince Plays Good but it's not Like HOT DAMN!!!

Santana and Prince both have guitar sounds that are so distinctly recognizable, you can pick it out of any song before you know what song is playing.

I Love Paul Reed Smith guitars but Prince has WAY cooler looking guitars, by far.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
