i have a question, if someone would be so kind as to answer. How, is it that Bootlegging is discussed so openly and almost accepted as commonly ok, when it is WRONG and ILLEGAL to bootleg? Hypothetically, let's say there's a painting by Pablo Picasso that was stolen from the artist not long after if was painted so no one knows it exists. But then let's say it turns up many years later at an auction house or museum. Of course we can all agree that the original theft was wrong. But is it wrong to still appreciate it? Is it wrong for those lucky enough to see it to talk about it? To stand back and go "wow"?
So, with that said...if by "in terms of song order" you mean which bootlegs form a coherent and worthwhile album I'm personally fond of Dream Factory and Charade. Unfortunately, when Prince's unreleased projects leak out the bootleggers seem to want to fill up the discs. So you'll get something like the Undertaker or the Camille album and then tacked on at the end will be a handful of live recordings from a completely different era with really bad sound quality. The thing I never understood about the whole bootlegging scenario was why Prince doesn't just release this stuff himself. Wasn't there supposed to be a Crystal Ball 2? Wasn't one of the reasons that he left Warner's because they wouldn't let him release The Undertaker? And then there are the live recordings. You just know there's a pristine soundboard recording of almost every live show he's ever done just sitting there in the vault. Can't you just imagine a 2-disc set of live material for every major tour he's ever done? The bootleggers sure can.  |
