This is good try to inject some reality to the org, but some people just like to live in a fantasy world.

3121Addict

If you keep The Word and Love, then add the live versions of 3121, Black Sweat, Satisfied and Get on the Boat then throw in the original version of The Dance it is a pretty decent album but far from his best.

Universal and Prince dropped the ball BIG TIME with this album.

I don't see 3121 as a dropped ball. Prince made it, you enjoyed it, I enjoyed it: ball was caught. Personally, I don't require that a song or a CD be labeled "a hit" in order for me to dig it. If I like it, then it's a hit (to me), just like if I don't like it; it doesn't matter how many times it gets played on a radio or how many copies are sold, it's NOT a hit (to me).

I never said it had to be a hit for you or anyone else to enjoy it. This album was designed to appeal to the masses. Universal had plans for this CD and a world tour was talked about too. Prince was supposed to do a lot of TV appearances for this CD. There were songs that would have big huge if it was pushed properly but it wasn't. Universal didn't do enough of their part and Prince didn't do enough of his part. Regardless of what did and didn't happen, I still enjoy the CD. cool

Whilst I personally feel that the Rainbow Children is better, I never fully appreciated 3121 until the release of Planet Earth.

A masterpiece? Really?

Umm.. for me 3121 fits into the 'middle-category' of Prince albums: good, pleasant, but nothing groundbreaking.

Other albums in that category: Controversy, Emancipation, Musicology and Planet Earth.

Come on everyone, it's time to realise 3121 is Prince's greatest record of the '00's, and probably more... Looking back at the album, it plays like a greatest hits record: basically all the songs are classic!

I know people bitch about this album a lot, and sometimes an album just needs a little time before the genius of it becomes apparent. But to me, 3121 was always a great album, and now, more than a year after its release, I think it's one of Prince's very best.

Hearing songs like Lolita, Love, Black Sweat, The Word, Fury, Beautiful Loved & Blessed, I can only think: WOW... That Prince was able to produce such a record after a 30yr. career is confirmation that he truly is the greatest artist dead or alive...

eek

Yes, 3121 (barring "B, L, &B" and "Incense and Candles") is a classic Prince album. I love it.

If 3121 had replaced Musicology in 2004, it would have been a monster album. I have always liked 3121 (minus Satisfied).

Apart from I&C and BLB I think it's a great album (GOTB annoys me a bit too). I got so excited by BS and Fury when they were "released" (Fury on SNL). Nothing on PE has got me excited.
I think that 3121 will be up there as a classic P album (not necessarily a masterpiece v. other artists). PE will eventually join C&D as a sometimes-defended-but-never-exorbitantly-praised mediocre effort.

aww... that's such a sad idea of fate for PE.
I've praised and defended this album ever since I got back here. I love it.

Other than Black Sweat (which im kinda sick of) & Satisfied (which was always so-so for me), I love the 3121 album these days. But PE has a more uniform "feel" to it and that's why I like it better.

3121 is going to follow in the footsteps of SOTT. I've always felt that this will be a classic Prince album that will stand tall among all of his great work from the 80's.

lol
That was a joke, right?

Even if it wasn't, it was bloody hilarious!

A masterpiece? Absolutely not. It suffers from some distracting problems.

Incense and Candles is possibly his most transparent, desperate, uninspired and insipid commercial pop attempt since Hot Wit U, On The Couch err Satisfied and Te Amo Corazon are dull ballads, B, L, & B feels shoehorned in and disrupts the flow of the second half of the album, Fury's guitar is perplexing muted in the mix, and Get On the Boat is an awful closer.

Not to say that it's all bad, though. The title track's dual vocal usage and disorted sound is oddly catchy and stylish, Love is wonderfully addictive Michael Jackson-esque pop, Black Sweat makes classic use of Prince's ability to utilize a minimalist beat, The Word is hypnotic, and The Dance has the kind of emotional climax that had been sorely missing in all of Musicology.

3121 is pretty solid overall; definitely better than Planet Earth.
