Pheramone... bizarre thoughts when thinking about Prince's songs... This is going to meander, please bear with me... This thread was provoked by a comment made in the SOTT WOW thread, about the DVD release this last weekend. A few people had raved about the 86-88 period as being the greatest time for Prince; one person, however, put forward the idea that the 94/5 era was Prince at his peek. And this got me to thinking... about Bottom.
You see, I mused on the comment, and songs and titles from the Come/Gold period began to come to me, and I began to concur with the suggestion... until: Pheramone. Prior to Prince releasing this little ditty - as excellent as it is - Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson had released a TV sitcom called Bottom, the first episode of which consisted of Richie and Eddie buying some pheramone spray from a sex shop, ODing on it and asking women if they'd like to see impressions of the Eiffel Tower, whilst sticking a coke bottle down their trousers, deciding whether or no a 'ripped' condom was a good idea and asking a woman to choose them because they were a 'love albatross'. All in all an exceptionally funny episode and the one reason why this exceptional song can never be taken too seriously in this household. I cannot think of any more bizarre associations with Prince songs that this... any takers?

I happened to listen to "Come" the album last night for the first time...I don't have any bizarre thoughts except when listening to the last song- Orgasm with that white lady moaning, I thought: "that b***h"!
That's all I have by way of bizarre...although not too bizarre...just sick...

It was Vanity, wasn't it... Also, the guitar is that off Ronnie Talk To Russia. I enjoy that album... if only he'd realeased it as a double with Gold and included Days of Wild and Interactive... ah, such wishes...

If every song was viewed as a passing thought, that was repeated, because it had been recorded. That would be like re-reading a page from a diary years later. That concept in itself is bizarre.
Because the Bizarre concept of a man and a woman concieving a child, to a song, they did not write...Just for example, take, "Endless Love." Although a child was concieved to that song, doesn't make Diana and Lionel's day of encoding that recording, a duplicate emotion recieved by the parents making love. What "Pheromone" was to Prince when he wrote the song, is never, going to be a duplicate emotion, for his listeners. As for these odorless sexual stimulations, A man can smell his partner...whether she's his true love or not. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Don't have any bizarre associations for this song, but I just have to say that "All my vital signs move up a couple of notches" is one of the sexiest vocal deliveries Prince has ever put down.

Whilst it would thrill me beyond all the midnights in the world to think Prince was influenced by Messrs Mayall and Edmondson, I do know that this song was not spawned as a result of watching a BBC sitcom... I'm merely noting down that whenever I hear the song, the image of Ade Edmondson asking if he could have £5 worth of sex always springs to mind... he is in a sex shop... get it? Such a great gag, such a great episode.
