"Gold" appreciation thread

I figured it was about time I posted this. There were some posts on another thread of people who love this song as much as I do.

Even with all of the music I've heard between hearing this song for the first time and now, this one is still my favorite. And I keep it close if ever I need to.
It's a powerful ballad like Purple Rain before it. Some people compare the two, but that's not what I do. Purple Rain is timeless and it'd be a shame to undermine "Gold" by comparing it to a legend.

The combination of music, the several sets of keyboards and the guitar solo at the end. Time and time again, the chorus rings true. Musically, it's very touching and has brought many a tear to my eye (especially when it's the last time he sings it through). The lyrics can be interpreted so many ways for me that it's not even funny, but they speak the truth. People always try to repeat what worked in the past, but Prince never operated that way. He's always doing something new and going to different places within himself to seek out The Truth.

Maybe that's what makes the song great. It's where Prince truly reveals one of the key points about himself. He's always changing and evolving with time. And he's a risk taker. He never tries the same thing more than once even if it worked for him before.

Well, I gotta go to class. Lovers of "Gold," c'mon down and post! thumbs up!

I've got to agree. It's the song that sucked me in to Princes world rather than just being a casual listener.

The first note of the guitar solo is the best first note to a solo I've ever heard, it gets me every time. I wait for it. And I'm usually counting it in along with him, every time I listen to it.

Think I'm gonna go listen to it now.

1...2...1,2,3,4. Bliss.

Gold is such an amazing song. I love the way Prince plays the guitar on it. Sometimes the guitar solo in Gold reminds me of the song Planet Earth

This song is the best. One of my favorites from TGE. I loved the climatic guitar solo and the way he harmonizes at the end. A lot of the time when I listen to it, I forget where I am and what my name is. It's that deep.

I guess I'd call it a spiritual song. I don't even know what category of music to put Gold in. It's Easy Rock kind of, and not quite as funky, as it is spiritual. I love it. Prince never ceases to amaze me. It gets to a humorous point, don't ya think...He just always is smoothe...
SSR...Smoothe Spiritual Rock. Not just Gold, Everysong seems to surpass some hidden limit. Like the whole world just sit's back and says, "I'll be damned if that wasn't the purple prince that just wizzed by me." He's just got it all goin' on....it's funny, to me.Ya know, when ya see a guy in yellow on a purple piano, you've gotta say to yourself..."Now this in life's reality, is highly entertaining..." It gives us humans a world glow from distant space....Without Prince's brilliance, they may never have been able to spot our dark planet." cool

It is very deep. Not to belittle anyone else, and I apologize if it comes across that way. But I feel like I'm closer to this song than most. Let's just say it "saved" me a couple of times and I've been grateful to it/him ever since.
I mean coming into his world at the point I did... so much music and so little time to listen to it. I was ready to crack under the pressure after listening to my 4th album that week (this was Spring break this year). Ready to be driven insane. I turned to this song and sorry if this sounds a little "out there," but I feel like after having a long cry after hearing this song, I saw the silver lining of it and since, I've had a special bond with this song that nothing could break.

I guess I'd call it a spiritual song.

I'd say it is because I've had one or two of those experiences after listening to it.

I agree with you Dreamy. I love this song. It was a shame we didn't hear it at the O2 in London. It would have made the perfect alternative to Purple Rain as a climax song. Prince just seems to have forgotten about it.

I can't say I've had any spiritual moments with this song (spirituality isn't really my strength) but both times I heard it live (at Wembley arena and at the NEC in Birmingham) it made my hair stand on end, and this was before I had heard the studio version. It still has the same effect today. Only two songs do that to me these days and the other is Purple Rain.

It´s agreat song but I wish there were a rawer, less synth-heavy version of this. I love synths in his music but they sound a bit out of place in this song, especially the first few seconds.

eek you're kidding... that's like... wow... I love how that comes across. They kinda make the song for me, but w/e.

But I wouldn't mind hearing him do it live. I'd request it if I could.

I actually like this, to me it's one of the higlights of the song. It gives the song an epic, heavenly feeling, like you're about to awakened from darkness with the message from this song. It has a gleaming quality (if this quality had a sound that is and I imagine this is what it would sound like) like a reflection of gold.

I think the studio verison of Gold sucks, there's one outtake that's so much better, so "less produced." I wish he could make studio tracks that sound like the live versions, because the live version of Gold is much superior.

It's brilliant, and quintessential Prince - a fabulous song, moving lyrics, superb harmonies, and all topped off with a wonderful guitar solo. The 'Na na na' ending gets me every time.

This is one of the last songs from Prince that Amazed me. Like so many of those songs from the 80s...this one gave me chills. I was on my outs as a fan with the guy until I heard this album, and in particular this song. The thing just soars.

That´s what I mean...I like the song but the studio version sounds a bit too crips and clean...it sounded so much better live, as all the other songs during that tour.I heard there´s a bunch of rawer, less overproduced Gold tracks circulating.I´m sure they sound better than the album versions. Gold is a fine album but somehow, the studio versions all paled in comparison to the live experience.

I love this song. I first heard it two years ago when I saw the video
on vh1 and I just couldn't get it out of my head. Unfortunately it took me year to find it on cd.
The acoustic rhythm guitar is nice, but I wish it was bit louder.

Seems like a lot of the posts are about "what ifs" and "It could be better if..."

I've only heard the album version... and that's really all I need. It's the version I bonded with... 2 me its special.
Makes me feel like the song's still a little unappreciated because he didn't do the album version a certain way.

I'd be all for hearing other versions of course, but I want to hear more about why you think its a great song.

And I think I'd die of shock if I ever heard him do it live. I'd be so happy I could cloud9

Wow! I can't believe that he didn't play Gold while in London, especially since the song went Top 10 in the UK.
