Prince Apparently Massive In Turkey?

Over a year ago a guy/person posted a thread evidenting that Prince has a massive fan base in Turkey? He also posted chart postions:

Prince in Turkey.

Not the bird.

While the hit singles may have dried up in some markets (UK & US) our lil fella is still claiming high numbers on the Turkish singles chart.
Since 1996 the following have all made the top 40:

Dec 96

Betcha By Golly Wow #10 (15 weeks on chart)

Dec 99
So Far So Pleased #9 (11 woc)

Jan 00
The Greatest Romance Ever Sold #2 (14 woc)

May 04
Musicology #15 (13 woc)

Jul 04
Cinnamon Girl #4 (25 woc)

Jan 06
Te Amo Corazon #1 (21 woc and counting...)

Now, I dunno if this is sales or airplay only, but it's good, innit.

"You ikja?"

Can Anyonr verify this? And Please any other chart postions?

Turkey is a very sophisticated country.
It's more western than you think. Istanbul has high-end couture along with the Grand Bizarre. What more could you ask???
Any Turks who care to speak up?? (there are) smile

I lived in Turkey for 5 yrs between '98 and '03. The vast majority of people my age (30s) didn't know who he was and as for younger ones you must be joking.

I wasn't even aware of a singles chart (and I follow charts) whilst I was there. the music channels have countdowns but they are all based on Turkish pop music

You will meet the odd muso who loves him as you do anywhere, but he is no way 'massive' in Turkey. The vast majority of Turks like Turkish pop and folk music. You do now have an MTV generation but they are not into Prince.

The original thread contributions suggested that this was most likely an airplay chart, as also suggested above.

It would probably be more accurate to retitle this thread:

"Prince apparently not that massive in Turkey after all"
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

According 2 the Turkish Statistical Institute,
the average height of a Turkish male is 4'8"..
So Prince is indeed massive in Turkey.. falloff

You mean the Grand Bazaar , not the Grand Bizarre , right ?

While Prince does indeed get a lot of airplay in Turkey, I doubt that his sales are very high, especially since the bootleg market is sabotaging the record industry there.
He was quite popular up until 1987, some songs from Sign Of The Times used to get played on the radio and in the clubs but Prince seriously blew his chance to win a new audience there...Madonna, Michael Jackson, Metallica, Foo Fighters, the Manic Street Preachers, Placebo and many other well known artists are very popular there and give concerts regularly, especially those I mentioned above.

Prince was just about to do his first show in Istanbul in 1993 but he changed his mind....German TV station Premiere was going to broadcast it and even pretended that the concert really took place.

Prince is fetured regularly in many fashion and music magazines and publications like Esquire or FHM but I guess it´s a bit too late now for him to win any new fans there.
Rosie Gaines did a small tour in the late 90s.

As vivid said, most young people are more into Turkish pop then western music and the younger ones don´t even know him. But the older generation sure likes him, depending on the people you hang around with.
Interestingly, he is VERY popular among Turks in Europe, especially in Germany....always has been since we love Funk, Soul and RnB.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
