bad planet earth review

NOW MAGAZINE....TORONTO CANADA...
.
.
Other than maybe Michael Jackson, there aren't many artists besides Prince who'd shell out the extra money for CD artwork depicting themselves in a messianic pose in a faux 3-D gimmick sleeve that looks like something you'd find in a box of Cracker Jacks. But the fuss about Planet Earth has nothing to do with kitschy artwork. The distribution of the music is what's creating controversy, since Prince has already given away 3 million free copies of the complete 10-song album in the UK as a cover-mount with the July 15 edition of conservative tabloid the Mail On Sunday, in advance of the North American release July 24.

Industry bitching about how the stunt will further undermine the troubled CD retail business has only served to boost the media profile of a substandard Prince recording that, under other circumstances, would likely have come and gone largely unnoticed. After Planet Earth's momentarily engaging eco-conscious title track opener, Prince strangely chops out an Edge-like riff for horrible U2 rip Guitar, then returns to more characteristic schmaltzy R&B balladry and corny 80s funk-lite jams tossed together like another vault-clearing of lame session outtakes. Sadly, this landfill isn't biodegradable.

I kind of agree with this review. Although I enjoy PE somewhat, the criticisms here are accurate.

perfect review

it almost makes you wonder if he made a crappy album on purpose and gave it away just as an "F U" to the music industry

then again, if it had been a great album.....the point would have been made better

now it is mostly forgotten about

Planet Earth, A single review.

Let’s start with guitar.
As a musician feels a female embodiment living within his instrument, “Guitar,”
Serenades to us through his best friend. “”Somewhere here on earth,” is a sweet love letter, seasoned with a knowing that someone in particular is listening. “The one you wanna see,” addresses a woman Prince greatly respects as the song rumbles with the thunderous point…Let no man put asunder, as the song rolls to a close. “Future baby mama,” claims this Prince needs a willow on his pillow to reinforce a family he longs to create. “Mr. Goodnight,” sounds like a wise decision for a girl that wouldn’t mind jumping on a plane and having a glass of champagne. “All the midnights in the world,” begs us to count happy days, for the exchange of an endless midnight.
Prince rocks his role in, “Chelsea Rodgers,” as we dance toward the CD’s end, tamed by, “The lion of Judah,” that roars his enemies will soon be no more. The CD dissolves with the sad reminder that war is an unnecessary loop afflicting the heart of humanity. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to affirm our own, “Resolution.”
If, “Planet Earth,” is in the palm of the artist’s hand, and peace lingers in his fingers, I would have to conclude that Prince has his finger on the trigger. T cool

I have to say, while it may not be a masterpiece track-by-track, it's a marvelously cohesive record and enjoyable from start to finish. Really, the more I listen to it as a whole, the more I like it.

I rather like the folky turn this album has taken.

Would love to see Prince explore his purple hippiness further, should he so choose.

to everyone who has posted here so what was ur last album that u liked? i thought planet earth was ok not brilliant but ok, i dont know why he doesnt just wirte an icredable album like the old days! has he lost it, i dont think so, i thought musicology was pretty god! 3121 was too rnb ish and planet earth has to many components to it, contry, rock , soul, pop etc when u look at albums like sign o the times or purple rain they seem to have consitency there not all over the place! if he really wanted to make a good album with material from the vault he could, but i doubt it would be met with any good critic cause it would be old stuff, and we'd all know it was old stuff so we wouldnt look at it the same as if it was unheard material! so thats why i think he hasnt done that.....
