Do You Feel Controlled or censored.... as a Prince fan? Those may not be the right terms, but what I'm sayin' is do you or are you getting tired of being told what you can and cannot do because your his fan? It is a privilege to be his fan, but I wonder sometimes if it's worth it-I mean you can't take photos of him, can't get an autograph, not to mention he'll sue your ass in a heartbeat. Is it all worth it? Tell me why?

Well, when I read your question it reminded me of some stories I read about him yon fansite(hq or the org).I know youre on the website controlling and suing thing but like one time I read a fan story about meeting him and she told him it was her birthday and he said "uhn-uhn we dont celebrate those anymore"...or something like that. The part that made me feel uncomfortable was the "we" part.It was like he wants his fans 2 do what he does...and he probably does but it was like he was trying to "control" the girl in that little time he knew her.
Anyway... I myself do not feel controlled because I will still listen to his dirty songs and sing the lyrics without including animals such as "ducks" and shit, lol.I will look at videos on the internet and I will take pics and look at pics from concerts He cant control me...he can try but he cant.

It will always be worth it to me since I don't want his picture or to have his autograph. He is the epitome of an true artist in every since of the word. I am content to just appreciate his work. I try not to think about it monetarily, but this year I spent/invested a pretty penny, however I'm sure what I received is intangible and priceless. I feel like I'm lucky that he is so generous with his art. I don't think it is my right to dictate how he shares.

This is very weird, but probably true. How could someone take a precious thing like a birthday and just completely ignore it? It makes me sad at times that as fans we get no consideration at all and we have supported the man forever. I'm still a fan, but I think that it is starting to bother me now.

I don't really care. I tend to separate the person from the artist a lot.
When I listen to Prince, I'm connecting with the man he portrays himself to be in his music. Beyond that, I lose interest. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I've always appreciated his genius and always will , but it is all about money when you think about it. We invest money in Prince-we enjoy his art, but that's all we ever get. Not a thank you to all my fans-not anything. I have also invested quite a penny in Prince things over the years-that was my choice. But is it really all worth it though?

I'm sure that we all listen to other people-I know that I do, but I don't know of any other artist that is always attempting to control things that way that Prince does. Sure, one must have some control-there are people out there who take things to the extreme, but for us fans who have been with him for 26 years don't we deserve at least a "thank you?"

But is it really all worth it though? well i'm sure i heard a few thank-yous/appreciative comments in the O2 shows, everyone got a free CD in the paper or with a ticket and on the last aftershow he played for near on 3 hours (for £25.00) - frankly i'm amazed compared to alot of other artists (tickets £50-100, no free CDs etc.) Prince seems to be quite good VFM - and on sunday we get the SOTT free in the Observer - give the guy a break "C'mon y'all - let me hear you sing, c'mon y'all, shake, c'mon y'all, jump" - Yes Prince -
"London do you feel for me what I feel for you"- yes Prince - "Can I play my guitar now?" - yes please

I love Prince dearly and have since before the Purple rain days but I must admit this trying to control everything is wearing on my nerves. I've tried to understand his reasons for his actions, but this latest thing with making photobucket delete all his pictures in peoples accounts is ridiculous! Yes i feel controlled AND censored.

I don't feel controlled r censored. Some act as tho he's the only celeb doing these thingz, but I don't know of any who u can just walk up on and take photos r get autographs. Not big name celebs, anyway.I have all the uncensored music, vids, and memories of the "old" Prince 2 last a lifetime.I actually kinda appreciate this new Prince, and I remain honored 2 b a fam. It's all worth it 2 me,and I'm with him every step of the way.I just love him.

Well, first of all, censorship can only be done by a government, technically. So, no -- I don't feel censored. And controlled? The only thing Prince controls (that affects me) is the number of opportunities I have to actually see him in person. (Whether I choose to take advantage of those opportunities is up to me.) We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Whoa!! Excellent question! I haven't told too many people... but it's because I know how people who don't know him too well (only what the media shows 2b "true") see him. They believe because of the things he's done in his work & onstage that he's just plain weird and that's kinda frowned upon in society. I'm half afraid to bring him up sometimes because I don't want to get that kind of reaction. As far as the other stuff goes, I don't really care if I don't get a picture of him or an autograph... it'd be a priviledge, but I wouldn't "die" if I never get the chance to meet him. His music is all I really need... and people here to discuss it with, people that understand and aren't so quick to judge him. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

it isn't really a privilege that were his fans, it's a privilege that he has fans. (i kind of give him credit for all the effort he makes to maintain his identity, but he does oppress his fans alot) [Edited 9/28/07 16:36pm]

great question and thread.
Do i feel controlled or censored? No, but I do get annoyed that he seems more interested in coming up with creative solutions for controlling his image then he does creating his art. Not that there is anything wrong with controlling ones image...I just wish the art was just as creative as giving away a cd or dvd via a newspaper. Space for sale...

For a while, I think I was under his spell most of the time, but I did have a will of my own. These days, I really have a will of my own... too bad some kind of balance can't be reached. Him hypnotize me as I listen to his music and I choose which albums I listen to. I give him my time and he takes it away... a mutual agreement had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. YES! Because i LOVE Prince Plus, Prince shares his Photos of himself and, he is Loving and that is why he has fans, he doesn't force people to be his fans, the ones that are his fans are because they want to be.

Now that Prince's business skills have improved exponentially, his musical creativity has vastly diminished, whereas his best 90's work suffered from a complete lack of proper business sense. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

well, i do feel censored... cuz nobody around me seems to want to talk about him and its awkward to bring him up... so I plain just don't unless someone gives me the go-ahead... music comes up, so I talk about Prince... if only for a while.
Then on car rides, I want to play him, but I'd have to cut some tracks my mom isn't comfortable with. She has this idea that Prince is "weird"... and I wouldn't want to get a lecture about what he's really singing about... like I don't know! Can't talk about him openly in conversation... very frustrating... cuz I gottsta talk about him... just gottsta had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

1st off let me say nursey nurse I'm tired of you dissapearing on me!
And No! I don't feel censored bcuz I respect people's wishes. Whatever he asks for doesn't bother me a bit. Dreamy said that she feels censored bcuz people doesn't want to talk about him with her..... Me personally I don't really care if anybody talks about him with me I enjoy him either way. Sure it feels good to know that people share the same interest in him that you do, and you like to converse about it nothing wrong with that. I always brought him up knowing alot of the consequences I was going to have to deal with {meaning people calling him out of his name etc}. I always got easily offended and still do, but not as much as I use to I just tell them "It's nothing wrong with your opinion, but if your going to try and stuff it down my throat as if it were facts then I don't wanna be bothered!" But that's just me soooo surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
I ain't felt this way in years...
