The thing with Graffiti Bridge is that while it contains some undoubted classics and the ever beautiful Joy in Repetition, the album feels unbalanced and a bit light in parts with the other acts included. It suffers from the 'hangover' effect Prince started feeling/displaying from Batman - what I mean is that he had the huge avalanche of creativity in the mid 80s and then tried to live up to his 'billing' which kinda sounded a bit contrived.

How about, Kamasutra

shake

Recommend Kamasutra only if:

a) You don't care whether s/he ever listens to Prince again
b) You don't care whether you remain friends with this person

lol

My recommendation if you're just introducing someone to Prince is to give a representative sample that shows his evolution, but keep it fairly mainstream. You can get into the heavier stuff later.

Dirty Mind
Purple Rain
Sign 'O' The Times
Diamonds and Pearls (not my favorite -- but it was well reviewed and is fairly decent)
Musicology (see D&P comment)
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Here was my method of thinking when I first thought about collecting albums.

I wanted to start with some of his best work, but I also wanted to know about where he is now musically. That's why I wanted to get Musicology and 3121 right away. Plus, I had already seen a little bit of what Prince has done recently, so I'd be working around familiar territory.
I asked around what people thought were his best and I got multiple answers. Everyone has their different opinions, saying that certain albums are better than others. But it boils down to their taste in music.
But a lot of people came together over certain albums and agree they're the best he's ever done. So 1999 and Sign O' The Times come up a lot. I was also told that "The Gold Experience" was the album he had done in the 90's.

I'd still recommend Planet Earth, 3121 and Musicology because that's where he is musically at present. Some of the old-school people underrate his latest work, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth listening to. There are still plenty of great songs there.

Someone else gave me a bit of advice about SOTT. They said to wait on that until I've heard more of his musical catalog. It is supposedly so good that it would make me appreciate my other albums less. I have taken this advice to heart. I got SOTT on 7/7/07 and haven't listened to it yet. But when I'm off from school when the semester ends, I'll have the free time I need to listen to it and digest. I'll let you know then if it was good that I waited.
had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

thanks everybody - there are now 32 different albums on this list - I have ultimate prince collection and planet earth so will get SOTT next which is definitely the most popular. Prince is certainly prolific - i'm wondering how many albums he has produced in total????
