Do i feel controlled or censored? No, but I do get annoyed that he seems more interested in coming up with creative solutions for controlling his image then he does creating his art. Not that there is anything wrong with controlling ones image...I just wish the art was just as creative as giving away a cd or dvd via a newspaper. Also the balancing act with the public's perception like in the 90's battle with Warner Bros. with "slave" scrawled on his face..now his current cause celebre -- will it overshadow his creations?

I felt a little controlled last night.
I was tossing and turning (my back was sore no matter what position I was in). And I don't really remember having any dreams. I'm sure "dream" Prince didn't make an appearance. Although, I could vaguely see myself listening thru TBA for the first time, flipping thru the tracks on my computer... Do you think he could have made it any clearer? I'm gonna listen to that today. And actually, I did let him kinda choose what albums I listen to. One of his songs plays in my head, so I listen to that album. And usually, I'll wait for a few hours to see if its the right one. Sometimes I change my mind, sometimes I don't. But those days have kinda gone since I started school again. had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

It is a privilege to be his fan, but I wonder sometimes if it's worth it-I mean you can't take photos of him, can't get an autograph, not to mention he'll sue your ass in a heartbeat. Is it all worth it? Tell me why?

Imagine though if you found they'd posted it on the web, then you tracked them down, got a lawyer onto them and they then start whining about THEIR rights....

control: to exercise restraint or direction over; dominate; command
nope. I don't feel controlled. People can only control you if you let them. Censored? Yes. Everything has some form of censorship. Even here. There are rules that are to be followed, and if those rules aren't followed, then you have violated the censorship. But no one can censor me in my own home

I felt controlled and censored on HQ. That's the fairest way to put it.
My views were pro-Prince. They were not tolerated. There is no self-control amongst many of the users there and here but the difference between here and there is that there is no preceivable policy here of being anti-Prince. On HQ, I felt that I couldn't walk a hundred yards there without having my pro-Prince view 'audited'. I had a quaker follow me onto another site and lecture me on why Prince is a shithead because he's treated 'his fans' so badly. Much of this I'd heard and was initially sympathetic until I did some homework and found that much of what is cited as 'reason to hate Prince' is prejudice (in the legal sense). I don't feel I'm being attacked as a fan when Prince sues a fan magazine or when Prince sues a website. They are businesses and I am a fan. He is not 'attacking' me. He is not even 'attacking' those businesses. Use of legal process is part of business-to-business strategy. And in Prince's case it's never been a first port of call. Deliberately confusing 'fans' with 'their business' which is using Prince's name and image is an absolute 100% guaranteed way to bring the law in on things. No use crying 'We're an independent fan community' in court as a defence to using his name and images in a decidedly anti-Prince context. And REALLY no use in trying to then say 'We're not anti-Prince'. The only thing to do here is CHANGE for the better. Take a look at what he doesn't like and, for real, ask whether it's really been done the best way so far. It hasn't or there would be peace. I wish Aaron the best in this. He made a good site but, in my view, he let a useless agenda of old bitterness and old news take control and has allowed immoderate moderators with views much more abrasive than his own to control his site. I'm really NOT making this up. txladykat said: control: to exercise restraint or direction over; dominate; command

No use crying 'We're an independent fan community' in court as a defence to using his name and images in a decidedly anti-Prince context. And REALLY no use in trying to then say 'We're not anti-Prince'. Correction : Uptown magazine and Housequake were never businesses. They never made any profit from their activities, on the contrary, they were volunteers dedicating all their free time to the artist they LOVE most. They could hardly be accused of hurting Prince financially because they were non-profit organisations. In our fine democrasy people can not be sued for being ANTI anything, so your comment about being anti-Prince has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. The core of this issue is COPYRIGHT and fact of the matter is that Prince is currently stretching the concept of copyright beyond belief. Essentially copyright controls the right to duplicate your work. Prince's work is his music and he's 100% in his right when he wants to prevent the distribution of illegal copies of his music. But the photo issue has NOTHING to do with copyright. As a public figure Prince is not protected by privacy rights when appearing in his function as a public persona. He has no rights whatsoever to stop those pictures from being published - the press knows this and that's why he allows them to photograph thim - the fans should know too that they can publish any photo from Prince that they have taken themselves. The only thing you should take into account is tthat he doesn't LIKE it and if you want to do him a favour you can comply to his wishes. Many fans are now led to believe that they are involved in illegal practices and it's this aspect that bothers me the most. I'm mainly very disappointed because once I believed that Prince was the pioneer of the Internet. He was going to revolutionize the way music was distributed on the 'net and the interaction with fans would be shaped in a digital way. What a joke that turned out to be !
