I’ve been listening to the London 02 Arena Finale Live Concert and he did it 4 times (Irresistible Bitch, Darling Nikki, Erotic City, and DMSR) at least during DMSR he sang (girl it aint no use, you might as well get loose, so work that body like you “WANT SOME MORE”) Come on!! He wouldn’t even attempt the Lyrics to Darling Nikki, Erotic City or Irresistible Bitch he would start and then say “Awwww…I can’t sing that”. What’s next ? rereleasing albums with revised lyrics? This REALLY bothers me!!!!
[Edited 9/27/07 8:03am] He did sing Irresistible Bitch, the first verse anyway. Of course I hear what you're saying, but I've always liked the fact that Prince does exactly what he wants and doesn't pander to critics or his fans. He's got the balls to follow his own thing no matter what and all in all I think that's pretty cool. I heard him sing all that stuff back in the day anyway. The man's nearly 50 - nothing wrong with growing old with a little old fashioned grace.

He hasn't turned anything off. It's there, but it's more subtle now. Like I said before, the current climate of music & media has lost all concept of the subtle approach. If Prince wants 2 bring this element in2 his life & the fans/media etc. I would say he is perfectly entitled 2, & in many ways I like it. I was sitting in a room with a bunch of 17-19 year old girls recently when the Black Sweat video came on & heard them all say that it was the sexiest thing they had seen, regardless of the fact that he is bordering 50. It goes to show, that in a world that is overly bombarded with overly explicit lyrics & images, even the younger generation apreciate the unspoken yet potent sexiness that Prince is bringing to the table now. We change, fashions change & the world changes. Get over it. It is a little selfish to expect anybody to stay in a place that they don't want to be, just because certain people prefer it that way.

[Edited 10/2/07 2:30am] But he himself only recently said he does not regret a single song from his entire career, saying they all represent something very potently relevant for that time in his life. Clearly some songs continue to resonate in the same way such as Purple Rain. & I am pretty sure he doesn't regard any songs as "bad" given that he played riffs from "head", featured "erotic city", "darling nikki" & "irresistable bitch" to name a few in his recent concerts. I think there is probably an element that he knows everyone is waiting on his to get explicit & he teases the audience with it. He clearly has fun with those tracks and doesn't make out any serious dislike or disagreement with them. He just choses to avoid certain lyrics. It's all playful. His career has evolved like we all do. For instance, school boys (myself included) may have pinched girls asses & wolf whistled at attractive girls when in school. Having grown up, such habits no longer feel right or seem appropriate. Such outward signals of sexual potency are no longer necessary. That's not to say that I won't ravenously devour a partner behind closed doors, but I wouldn't need to display that behaviour in public. I see this move as something very similar. It does seem completely rational & natural to me.

You want your kids to know Prince? Then show them everything there is, not just the cutesy or religious side of his work. Oh right. Any decent parent protects his or her offspring, in his or her own home! There are subject matters out there that are NOT for children. Your argument is a bit like saying a parent should expose a child to an actor's entire oeuvre, to the R-rated films they have starred in as well as the PG or G-rated ones... or the parents somehow lack integrity. You know I love you, meow, but sometimes... Why not? I could see the argument if Prince had made his career singing about bitches and hoes and drive-by shootings and beating the shit out of people, but he hasn't. Prince may have gotten outright nasty sometimes, but his work was rarely if ever disrespectful or violent, and the rare times it was it was generally done to prove a point. The point of contention seems to be the sexual content, but honestly. A lot of the same parents who are getting all uppity about Prince singing about doing the nasty are the same parents who let their kids watch Pirates of the Caribbean and just bought them Halo 3. That's not a lack of integrity, but it does smack of questionable values when sex is deemed X times more horrific and unacceptable than violence. I understand that parents want to protect their kids, but at the same time I think kids are sheltered way too much. How can you possibly introduce anybody of any age to what Prince and his musical legacy is if all you show them is the G rated material? They'll end up thinking Prince is nothing but some fluffy, sappy bitch with weird ideas about religion (not that he isn't that too, but...) What point is there in even attempting to share your love of the little man with your offpsring if they'll only get the sanitized; that is, the incomplete version? Say what you want about where Prince is now musically, but he wouldn't be there if it wasn't for everything he made before. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

But if you attended any of the London shows (I live very locally to the o2 so was fortunate enough to attend 12 dates & aftershows) you would know that he is not at all ashamed of his past. He he makes outwardly playful references to the censorship he uses on his tracks. If he was shamed of his past, he would have ditched everything pre-2000 & played a strict "rainbow children", "news" "planet earth" set. Instead, when playing the "sampling" section of his show, he would laugh & smile whilst dropping in bits of "Darling Nikki" & singing "Irresistable Bitch" right up until the curse word & then laughing & teasing us with the next track. He knows that we all think he is taking he is taking himself too seriously with being squeeky clean, & I think he has great fun in playing up to that role in an almost comic way. I think that Prince has evolved into a more all round entertainer. Having watched his concert shows from back in 1980, it is very clear now that he has evolved. Back in the early 80's he was very moody looking and serious. All that has changed to this day is he has toned down the language & appears to be just having the greatest laugh on stage. Anybody present at the aftershow where he sang about his cock-eyed, three handed lover will be able to vouch for the fact that a new comedic facet of Prince has emerged recently. Let's not look at what is no more & focus on what is to be. [Edited 10/3/07 2:02am]

Well, we sing in this household (as in, professionally), so we do pay close attention to lyrics... My daughter likes to hang out with me during practice, and sings right along. So naturally, in the car or the living room she does too. When there's a lyric or word she doesn't understand, she asks me about it.

And if he wants to sing those songs, then why won't he just do it? Well my answer 2 that question would be that there is MORE to the songs he sings than the curse words within them. For instance, DMSR. At the london shows he says how he has to play that song for himself coz he loves it so much, but just decides to replace the word "whore" with "want some more" which leaves the entire vibe & subject matter of the song intact, yet makes it more in tune with his current personal views on bad language. Quite simple I would say. If he can change drummers & have a brass section play on "Peach" or perform a custom version of "All the Critics Love U In New York" for a london audience, why can he not simply adapt certain song lyrics (minor changes) to be more OAP friendly & more child friendly? Seems like some are hanging on too hard too yesterday (or perhaps addicted to swearing??)...

If this were the likes of someone like, oh say, "JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE"; then, you might have agreed with me. When the original intention of the song on that line was meant to rhyme that one couplet, he kind of ruined the flow (Not that I even really like that song, as it is. Because I don't. But, what a butcher to an already badger.). Not that it was overly necessary. But, really. As someone else said. I'd rather he just avoided it altogether or just play an instrumental version of those types of songs. Either way, as long as the "GOOD" music is residual in some form and/or fashion, I'm content. I knew deep down that somebody would be able to squeeze some more milage out of this one. For the record, I do not own any purple 3-D glasses. I am going on musical/social history (of which Prince features quite strongly in the breaking down of contemporary boundaries) & interview dialogue from the man himself. I have not yet even got 2 expressing my opinion on whether I would prefer him to avoid singing these songs or not. Although unfortunately, personal opinion appears to be the only basis for people judgements on this subject. & again, with opinions, nobody can win or be right because that is all they are. If not, I'm not too interested to hear your opinions (again). So don't bother quoting me. It is annoying but I think we'd rather hear these songs with a couple of minor changes than none at all. He seems to alter a word or two in the majority of songs performed now and would hardly touch his peak 80s years otherwise. Glug, glug like a mug

Or maybe the better question is, why's he feel the need to be an annoying prat about it? If he's not going to sing something, then he just shouldn't sing it. I'd hardly say I'm hanging on too hard to yesterday. Purple Rain came out the year before I was born. Like I said, I don't think there's any need to change the lyrics. Somebody coming to a Prince show, no matter what their age, is chances are already familiar with what's come out of his mouth in the past, and isn't bothered by it. Second, anyone who thinks words like whore or bitch or shit or fuck are swears is deeply misinterpreting the Biblical edict against swearing. What the Bible says is that you should not swear by God -which hey, includes "Good God", "My God", "Oh My God", "Oh Lord" etc. All phrases Prince makes ample use of. Those words he's decided he's not going to utter on stage anymore are at worst, a bit rude and probably best not said in front of Grandma. But not swears. Besides, changing "work your body like a whore" to "work your body like you want some more" really isn't making it any cleaner. In fact, I'd argue the "clean" version is light years ahead in the filthy department. [Edited 10/6/07 19:14pm] "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Prince's rapping I can handle. It's when he decides to have some untalented loser spew their lameness through a song that he really fucks it up. Why, oh why can't Prince get a decent rapper to guest? It's not like he doesn't know any. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
