Miles Davis questions

Hi, I have a 33 minute live recording jam of Beautiful Night, with Miles Davis playing.

How much of the trumpet that we hear is he playing on it? Does he do the first trumpet solo? etc

Did they or did they not record stuff together? Do you think there's anything in the vault? From what I've read I doubt it, and I suppose, if they had recorded stuff then it would have seen the light of day.

Does anyone have any photos of Prince and Miles Davis together?
Cheers
Stuart

There's nothing that's ever emerged of them ever having recorded work together, Andy ... only performed on the New Year's Eve show together briefly..

Certainly, Prince sent Miles music for him to record over ("Can I Play With U?"). There are also studio recordings where Miles added material to a Prince song ("Sticky Wicked"), and Miles playing Prince songs live (e.g. "Movie Star").

Prince has claimed that he has recordings of him with Miles stored in the Vault, but nothing has ever emerged, and Alan Leeds can't recall of any occasion or opportunity where this might have taken place.

I think one of my issues of Uptown has a small picture of them together.

or, just maybe...if miles was still around, he might have joined prince's band around the same time maceo did. then prince might have had maceo parker, miles davis and larry graham IN THE SAME BAND

i really love can i play with u, btw. its not got a great reputation for some reason but i love love love it. great song, great bass playing, a bridge which is funky as hell, and miles' trumpet sounds perfect. i would love a high-quality version.

i know that. but if he had still been around at the turn-of-the-century (whether he had gone on tour in 88 or not) he might have coincided with larry & maceo

no way! Miles was in a total different galaxy. How in the world he was gonna listen to prince what to play and when to play it? who would be the boss? Maceo and Larry fit on princes band but miles no way

I agree with electrorock...

There's no way if Miles was still alive he'd be in Prince's band, along side Maceo and Larry etc. (and I'm ignoring the fact he would have been 81 this year anyway).

Miles was way too much of a free spirit, and he had an ego as big as Prince's. Plus he was somewhat a loner. His trumpet style wouldn't really suit the 'Tower Of Power'-esque horns that Prince usually employs. Miles, like Prince, just had to have that 'control factor' in his favor. Call it a personality quirk. I think this is the reason that despite their friendship, they never really 'hit it off' musically.

Miles may have 'listened' to Gil Evans (or Wayne & Tony, or Marcus Miller etc.), but don't kid yourself, those albums are still 'MILES DAVIS' records - the same way that GCS2000 is still a 'PRINCE' record to anyone in the know.

Agree also..
Miles went through the same thing with others including Jimi Hendrix and there was all kinds of speculation there too about collaborations but nothing ever came to pass. Really what was going on was that Miles liked to acknowledge the people that were influencing him. He wasn't shy about saying who he thought was great. He was also open to being produced, to taking a back-seat although, in practice, he was doing so secure in the knowledge that his reputation remained such that he'd still be upfront come release-date.

With Prince, Miles DID ask him to produce him but Prince was taken aback and said that he couldn't imagine telling Miles what to do in the studio.
