Rave...good or bad album?

I listened to this again today and I can't make up my mind if I like it.

I love the title track...and then of course "The Greatest Romance" but the rest seems lacking in something.

Wht do you guys think?

Both good and bad, both cliched, immature and dull , and mature, interesting and creative. I believe the dividing point is Tangerine, everything before is crap (I don't like the cliched "Greatest Romance", but the later songs come at a nice pace and are strong

Boringbastard

that´s weird i was listening to it earlier and was thinking of putting a similar topic on.

i reckon it´s a good album and beats a few of his more recent efforts (i like planet earth tho) it´s mainly musicology from his recent albums that doesn´t really do it for me. and 3121 was good but patchy. this is all in comparison to other prince albums, i´m not moaning!

but Rave is a good album, haven´t listened to Rave In2 (Rather than Rave Un2) for a while. Which do people prefer??? confused

definatly princes most contrived album

he had a real agenda-he desperatly wanted a hit-doing the santana thing

he realy whored himself around europe as well-and for me lost his dignity a wee bit-there was god awful innerviews on that promo tour

and the band looked soooo bored rehashing baby knows or doing countless LIP SYNCHS to TGRES

However i love "the sun.moon and stars"

and like all prince albums it has it moments but ive never heard a prince record before or after this that sounded so.....forced.

infact that media/promo onslaught prince did (ultimatly for nothing) pissed me off..

imagine if hed done a fifth of that publicity for THE TRUTH??!!(hrmmmph imagine if he had actually properly released it-i digress)

RAVE? neither love it or hate it-and prince albums should never provoke APATHY but this one does. neutral

I'll get back to u guys on this after I've heard it a few more times.

With only one listen under my belt, I really can't go around saying exactly how I feel... I just might say things I might regret later.

I've always liked Rave. yes there are some weak tracks on there, but the ones that are good IMO are fantastic.

I love the much hated "Hot Wit' U." Party Man is great.
And I love "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore", Silly Game, Man O'War. those 3 expound the emotional turmoil that he was going thru at that time. They just seem to genuinely come from his heart.

I agree that it seems contrived (the way he had "Prince" produce it was very contrived). The title track is a mess (which is a shame, since better unreleased versions exist), Undisputed is catchy but wears out its welcome pretty quickly, and TGRES makes no sense (what is he talking about?). Some other songs, like Tangerine and So Far So Pleased, sound like he was going after the boy band audience. Baby Knows is overrated crap, in my opinion, and Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do is embarrassing (far worse than Graffiti Bridge, if you ask me). Something about Eye Love U, But... seems fake, like he's trying to create the emotion rather than feeling it genuinely.

But I absolutely love Strange but True and Prettyman.

Rave in2 was much better than Rave un2. I agree with a lot of the comments here. There are several stinkers on both of the cds, but I enjoy:

Undisputed (both versions) - some people don't like either, but I like them. Both versions are decent (imo)

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold - Love both versions. The in2 version is longer

Hot Wit U - Like both versions. The in2 version is considered the "Nasty Girl" remix"

Tangerine - It's ok

So Far, So Pleased - It's ok

The Sun, The Moon And Stars - It's ok

Everyday Is A Winding Road - UGH....Larry Graham is featured on it.

Man O' War - HATE THIS TRACK ON BOTH ALBUMS. Though, the version on un2 is more listenable, I still hate the song.

Baby Knows - I like the extended version on in2, but they are essientally the same song.

I Love U, But I Don't Trust U Anymore - Good song if u are going through a breakup. I like it.

Silly Game - It's Ok

Strange But True - UGH!! Can't stand this song. I like the lyrics, but the song sux

Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do - My 2nd favorite track on the cd. It should have been the 2nd signle.

Prettyman - My favorite track on the cd (hence my name). It is P's best "James Brown" song. I prefer the extended version on in2, however (if you count an extra minute as exteneded).

Notice how I didn't mention the title track. I don't care for either.

The dumb thing is me posting here when I don't even know how I feel about the album. I got very little out of it the first time I listened 2 it.

But I guess this thread says "you'd better get back to it asap so u can start commenting on it"...

I just want 2b sure about how I feel about it b4 I go running at the mouth about how awesome it is (like I did with 3121) or how much I don't get it (luckily I didnt get that chance with 1999, got back here when I fell in love with it).

I always listen to an album a few times before I say for sure what I think of it. However, I've listened to Rave more than enough to know exactly what I think of it. The great thing is when you hear those albums that you fall in love with right away. 1999 was definitely one of those albums for me. In fact most of P's old albums were.

I've had very few occurrences like that. When I'm on fire cuz it's so awesome.

3121 (which I now rank last among all my albums)
ATWIAD
Dirty Mind
Controversy (2b fair, it took me 2 listens 2 love it the way I do)
Planet Earth

Half the time, it's cuz it wasn't exactly what I was expecting (Musicology & 1999) and the other half, I just don't get into it at first (Come, prince). Come was so-so... but after 4-5 listens, I was like 'WOW'

And there are some cases where I'm brought all the way around 2 the other side. TGE- classic example. It was so diff. & new that it was a scary experience at first (I blame Endorphinmachine 4 that... I really wasn't prepared)... but even so, I have a very complex relationship with that album. I kinda have to be in the mood for it for it to really have an impact on me. Or its one of those things where "if it's meant 2b amazing, it will be"... I have a 45% success rate with it. At least that's what it feels like... the past few times weren't pretty.

What about artists other than Prince? There must be some other albums that you've loved right off the bat.

Yeah, of course they've been.

But truth. I really didn't think of albums as a whole until I started listening to him. I figured an artist such as him thought like that, making the tracks of his albums come together as a whole. Just one of those amazing qualities about him that sets him apart from the rest.
