producing Prince Prince has done it himself all these years and some say he needs someone else every once in a while fro that wonderbread squeezable freshness..maybe a few songs per release..maybe not. The Prince sond comes from him doing it himself. I think it would be interesting to see what one of his releases (songs or cd) would sound like with someone else producing behind the boards etc. Or just for one song..and to give it some reference, an already released song so some perspective can be heard. Now obviouly something by someone like Glen Ballard, Puffy etc would be scoffed at. Heres some releases that would be cool to hear as produced by others...off the top of my head:
Purple Rain-produced by Mutt Lange..for that epic guitar sound Def Leppard sound? Dirty Mind by Malcolm McClaren? punk it up more SOTT by Willie Mitchell? The man responsible for Al Greens churchified sound...Prince already did great with the soul sound of Adore and Forever In My Life and some othe r cuts..but damn could you imagine? Sly Stone would be another one that would have been cool to have produced this one..and he's there in spirit anyways on Dorothy parker. Parade by Jimmy Jam n Terry Lewis? They would have Control-ified it and added more prominant keyboards to some songs and I can hear Jimmy playing beautifully in Sometimes It Snows In April. They would have made it more industrialized bombastic on such tunes like Kiss and Life Can Be So Nice Gold--Jimmy and Terry again (at least they could do the song BJB) 1999--Brian Eno. He could have added some atmosphere to Free ...hell, its like he already did Something In The Water at the ending of the song ...but his touches would have added greatly to Critics and Automatic...U2s' Achtung baby is 1999 revisited, Eno style. Lovesexy--Frank Zappa--I dont know why but I get this Zappa vibe thinking about Lovesexy as a whole. And maybe Lenny Kravitz for some tunes like Positivity and Lovesexy, and Glam Slam--those seem like Lennys' style --some retro guitar thats his style in Lovexy, Glam Salm and Positivity would be cool. Symbol--Teddy Riley on some cuts like Wanna Melt With U-new jack swinging it even though it was aleady done n over with by the time Symbol came out...but he still had that Blackstreet jerking vibe etc...and Sexy MF and my Name Is... Come-Martin Gore of Depeche Mode and Flood. Come is dark and needs some kings of dark production on it. ATWIAD--George Clinton and his pfunk all stars---just think what they do to Temptation---if Mr Hampton or Mr Hazel could have helped out..this whole album screams out for it to be funk-acidized Chaos n Disorder--The Glimmer Twins,Mick n Keith. Make it raunchy and not so sterile clean rock--needs to be dirtied up with 60-early 70's Stones Jimmy Miller production.Or Slash maybe. Baby Knows needs Keith Richards up on that imho... I can't say I see Jam & Lewis doing anything interesting with Prince. It's too much of the same ol' same ol'. It would almost be like the Black Crowes wanting to produce the Stones circa 1988, or The Faces during their heyday...Green Day producing The Ramones...
Not that I see Prince turning over the reigns to anybody either. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I hear ya butI think Jimmys' keys would fit nicely on Sometimes It Snows and that their Control sound would have indistrialized Life Can Be..nicely as well as on Mountains...and their slow side would fit the opening 3 numbers pretty well. I dont want them to do Pretty Man--Time era type of product. "Climb in my fur."

[This message was edited Mon Oct 7 10:03:23 PDT 2002 by rdhull] George CLinton hasnr produced anything relevant since Atomic Dog. Keith Richards needs Mick Jagger to do anything of value and has proved it tine and again ver the years. The greatness of Prince is that he is the cocumate self contained artistic force in music. His genius comes through clean and clear when he creates his own art. I dont even want to see anyone produce Prince other than Prince

Funny RD. I'd like to Produce Prince alright . In Bed that is. but seriously, I wish I knew how to do these things Musically. I know I could write with somebody ,but play I don't know how. Really, some other people's ideas to me their imput is always a good thing. Different Ideas and Perspectives gives one a more Colorful Picture of Life.

I was wondering if I was going to have to put a disclaimer as an opening sentence. And Prince being the "consumate" ( u do mean that , not concumate right?) self contained artist is not the point..It is about the effect on what other production styles "would have" sounded like etc and what an outsode ear feels wouold be cool as personal opinion...calm down. Nobody is doggin Precious Prince. [This message was edited Mon Oct 7 10:26:38 PDT 2002 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

Different Ideas and Perspectives gives one a more Colorful Picture of Life. Actually Prince should work with some New People and New Producers. Why Not? I do believe that somebody else could also Capture the Sound Prince wishes to Create and it could Work. If he is gonna do something different Musically well it Would be Interesting to have somebody else Produce it and give it a Different Feel to it? Maybe Rougher sound. Maybe he can feel Comfortable to allow Somebody Else to Take Charge . Would this, could this Ever INDEED Happen? Could Prince Ever LET GO and Lay-BacK? Must he Always Have the Last Word On his Work? Wouldn't it be Interesting if Prince just Sat Back and let Somebody else do the Work?
