I look at it this way.

Youtube has become the place where people express themselves by posting clips of things they enjoy and want others to see. Some of these clips are new and original, and some are works owned by someone else. However, no money is changing hands, and what is basically going on is that people have a way to express what they enjoy and don't enjoy. That's all that's really happening here. All the power and money remains with the original creators -- Prince is still rich, film executives are still driving in sports cars, and people living paycheck to paycheck are still doing so.

As far as copyrights go... the digital age has made copyright law obselete. Maybe that's the way it should be... it seems to be the will of the people. So be it. In the old days, copyright law was relevant, allowing executives and huge corporations to rake in the money and control the distribution of things. And what did they do? Price fix music. What else? Buy up radio and control it by playing the same 10 songs over and over. Technology allowed people to squash the control and therefore get control back, effectively making this kind of control obsolete.

Copyright law is obsolete, the way it should be now. The end.

Posted on the site regarding Prince/YouTube/Postings.

THIS really sums it up!

Let PRINCE be, let him creat his art and music, enjoy what he releases. There is so much of his musci already out there...ENJOY IT! There will always be more to come...and I believe there will be even more when he is gone too..

WOW!
PRINCE has the “rights” to his music and art. YOU DON’T! This NOT a question of gaining popularity by YOU TUBE allowing his videos to be uploaded by people who don’t own the rights NOR is it an issue for anyone to enjoy his art/vidoes/music for free.
Just BEACAUSE “YOU” don’t get it “FREE” DOES NOT MAKE PRINCE “a Jerk” or “a Control Freak” or “Unpopular”. He is the ARTIST NOT YOU! If you don’t LIKE PRINCE or His Music DON’T BUY IT!
*for the “younger” generation (and I am in my early 30’s)…..GROW UP! There is BETTER and REAL MUSIC that exists other than the “SHIT-HOP” and “SAMPLED, Un-ORIGINAL, GANSTER, THUG GHETTO MUSIC” that seems to be dumbing down our youth.
Learn to play an intrument or study music and arrangements and just maybe you might see the GENIUS that is PRINCE.

Very Well said my friend. It does seem a change is on the horizon 4 Musicians/Entertainers alike. Prince is just gonna have 2 learn 2 adjust 2 the 'Sign O The Times'. He has always been a trend setter...lets see how well he handles adjusting 2 the trends. wink

Prince has been booed and talked about many times before in his career when he first started out, I kind of think he misses the controversy, or he's had a brain tumor for the last 10 years that's making him crazier by the minute! confused

You say "Prince is rich" as if he doesn't need the money.

Maybe he doesn't NEED the money, but because he is rich and well-off financially, does that mean he doesn't deserve proper compensation for his work?

If he decides he is making too much money, then he can choose a charity to give it to.

OK, I finally got the link to load and read the comments. Those are really some ignorant motherfuckers. I mean a bunch of no taste shit hop listening motherfuckers making comments like "Prince sucks, who would want to buy his music anyway". I mean, really, like their opinion of music really matters anyway since they don't listen to actual "music". They didn't surprise me though.

All those "fag" comments really pissed me off though. I tried twice to post...."If you are tired of homosexuality being shoved down your throat, then bend over so we can shove it up your ass"....but it wouldn't go through. Damn, I hate homophobic bastards.

I love it! Apparently, someone from the org made a post over there because they used my term "shit hop" in their post when they referred to the state of today's music. That's OK though, I don't mind lending the term out for a good cause. lol

Why should Youtube be allowed to make money off of Prince's work without his permission?

How can a non-musician discuss the future of music from anything other than a consumer point of view???

These people who are defending Youtube need to take a step back and look at the facts. Youtube is making money off of artist's hard work!

It's easy to defend Youtube because these people are getting something cool for free. Then when you want to take it away they get all pissy.

When I used to travel to colleges and perform music, sometimes the only money I would make would be from CD sales. I would literally NEED that money to find a hotel or buy gas to get to the next town. I was really living show to show. You cannot understand how PISSED I would get when some dumb drunk college student would be falling over at the merch table and say, "I love your music! I'll download your stuff online or just burn it from a friend. I'm a poor college student."

Sure, I was definitely flattered they liked my music and I completely understood that burning my CDs would certainly get the word out. But I felt JIPPED. I worked really hard to entertain those spoiled brats and I should have been compensated. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, would piss me off more than the whiny phrase "POOR COLLEGE STUDENT

People also used I'm a POOR COLLEGE STUDENT when defending how they would use Napster in their dorms as if downloading music was no more important then ripping off toilet paper in the dorm bathroom when they took a dump.

Sorry, I am really venting right now, but I totally defend Prince in this. People steal and steal and get things for free for so long and then when you finally take a stand (radical man) they resist as if they were entitled to it all along.

Poor college student, my ass! In 4 years you will still be just as dumb and drunk as you are now, but you will have a good 6-figure job. But the musicians that WORK JUST AS HARD AT THEIR CRAFT AS YOU DO AT YOURS will still be out there peddling CDs to a bunch of bratty frats kids.

nod And how dare we watch videos that Prince no longer profits from, or could NEVER profit from (cellphone gig vids, anyone?). How dare we enjoy his music when it doesn't add more money to his $400m empire. HOW DARE WE.
