Prince controlling his image.

At time Prince will be called a "pioneer," especially in regards to his use of the internet to distribute his music, just to have examples of other artists doing what Prince is doing, or something similar, already.

But the measures Prince is taking to control the use of his image, (if that's what he's doing in his recent legal activities against fansites and other online sites), is Prince really the first to do this? At the level Prince is at present?

The estates of Elvis Presley and Bob Marley are very protective of the way their images are used.

I'm all for artists protecting themselves. It's a complex issue. Is it okay just because no one is making money off the material in question etc.

The recent extent of all that's happening now just makes me sad. Hmm An interesting idea just occured to me. I'm wondering if anyone has actually studied the benefits vs the harm done to an artist's career in relation to the extent to which they embrace or try to cut off their exposure on the internet.

Pearl Jam is often listed as an example of a group that embraces the internet, the fans and the whole "bootleg" issue by offering downloads of their shows on their website.

How is this influencing their bottom line? How is this affecting their image? Their fanbase? Etc.

vs

Prince, who seems to be doing just the opposite to the point that he and his legal team want it all removed and are not offering on an official site or in an offical medium.

Sorry, just rambling now.

I'd like to see a poor college student do the study I mentioned.

If Elvis or Marley were alive, they would probably embrace the internet. Marley, moreso. It's a little different when it's the "Estate of".

There are many that aren't crazy about the idea that the industry has changed to this degree but unless they can fight it, with a real solution behind them, they go along. At least they pretend to embrace because they feel it's good for their image. And it is.

Time may come where there is a real shutdown on the way things are being done, but it's looking more like those that embrace, will find new ways to make it all work for them.

Things change, that's a part of life...and at this point, this has become the way a generation thinks and expects things to be, that will be hardest to change. To them, if you don't have an internet presence, you don't exist.

IAintTheOne

He needs to take lessons from bands Like Phish,String Cheese Incident,Widespread Panic,On the one,

all these bands embrace the internet and give their fans soundboard shows for them to download, and even then these bands also have "taper seats" and these bands are successful as hell, prince thinks he can control everything, this is the dork who tried to sue a spaghetti company remember that? people are going to be pretty much done with him, and as he sits there trying to figure out what he did wrong?. it'll be way too late in the game.
