It gets it's fair share of praise.

IMO, it's one of the best tracks of the 90s, the ending is a little overblown, but not so much to ruin an otherwise brilliant track. If only Prince let this side of him show more often.

I love the trio of Papa, Race and then Dark... probably my favourite three-songs-in-a-row on any Prince album!

That is raelly a great song. Very emotional.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

Some may not like to speak about it as it hits too close to home.

Others may not understand it as they, thankfully, never delt with the issue.

The darker side of Prince is definitely one I wish he'd show to his fans more often. The song's eerily brilliant.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

True. But it's such a REAL song. Makes me wonder how John L. felt about it.

As a LOVING FOREVER FAN, i can say being 7 years younger and growing up to his music in the 80's mainly,:and i have never met him in person: , wish i could,: that Prince thinks about the Papas in the world. He is wanting his Mama, which he hasn't met in the MegaPhysical yet! smile

confuse Do you know for sure that P's daddy didn't beat him? Cuz I'm almost certain that P is speaking (singing in this case) from experience. I wasn't there so I wouldn't be able to say. But I seem to recall him interviews saying his
relationship with his dad was rough, to say the least. Also, your confusing this song with a semi-fictional storyline from a major motion picture.

nod The goodness is so there on this track. Could've done without the chipper ending, but overall, it's brilliant. Count me in with the "Princey, Please Show Us the Cranky" club.

Yeah, but the rest is still plausible for all we know.

I do find myself wondering from time to time when I listen to The Kid's music what John L. thought of it -so much of it that mentions a father figure does so in a dark or negative way. Suicide attempt and wife beating in PR, suicide and child abuse in Papa, child and spousal abuse in The Sacrifice of Victor; and I know there's more. It could be real, it could be fiction. But if it's fiction, I'd have to ask: Why?

As a boy,
I was always told to hush up & finish my pie whenever I asked this question at our family get-togethers.

I have since theorized that maybe it was cuz he was a Rolling Stone or something.
