I'm sure Per Nilsen states The Black Album was only available (originally in 1987) on vinyl... and I'll take his word over any "Ooooh I've got an original Cassette/CD!!!" post here or anywhere. So unless you gotsta a spankin' LP with a particular number on it, stop dreamin'.

If you read the article (please read before over-reacting) is clearly states that ORIGINALLY the album was only available as a bootleg on vinyl. there were tons of cassettes that were made (usually bad copies of someone taping it from vinyl). YEARS LATER, it was released as a cd on Warner. good god, anytime some of you purple sheep sense any kind of criticism, you go on the attack. I thought it was me. Back then, I don't think I even knew what a CD was! Yeah, the way I remember it, it was an impossible to find vinyl record and everyone had a half-assed, smudged up, badly-labeled cassette tape "tHe BlAck albuM" that hissed and cracked and warbled like a mo'fo.
It was gold. Talking about tone-deaf rappers and calling himself a "skinny mutha-f**er with a high voice", Prince made a rekkid that was indeed a bitch. I should get the re-released CD version because soon enough cassette tape players will go the way of the 8-Track...

cant say i agree with you about this article, although it is a bit sketchy, it is still an interesting read and brought back a few fond memories. I think I ended up with more copies of the black album than any other prince album. BTW that is an incredible Prince CD collection you have, was stunned looking at it today. Well done If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Sheesh. No, it doesn't say that. It says: A vinyl-only, eight-song funk free-for-all, it was supposed to be Prince’s big fuck-you to those who thought the Minneapolis kid was going too soft after the commercial success of Purple Rain.

Pur-lease. Excellent quality dubs were circulating mere months later. It was even played on radio (Holland, Germany,...). ButterscotchPimp said: YEARS LATER, it was released as a cd on Warner.
And YEARS earlier it was on bootleg CD. Which was a straight rip from a CD that fell through the cracks. Initially, original TBA CDs were highly valued and were sold for tons of money.
