BeautifulStrange vs Joy in Repetition, any connections? So i'm finally getting around to getting all the rare/outtake stuff Ive missed over the years. I was listening to Beautiful Strange tonight, and instantly Im reminded of Joy In Repetition, escpecially the live version from the ONA Box Set, the after show. Im sure this has been mentioned before, but is there a connection? Or is this just another case of Prince using previous basslines, riffs or drum patterns over again. Either way, what an amazing track. Thoughts or otherwise?

There is definately a similarity... Both use similar chord progressions, and have that 'happiness in sadness' melencholly vibe about them. But I don't think there's any specific connection other than the fact that they are similar styled songs. I guess only Prince knows.
It would be cool to hear a live version where he mixed the two. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

They're both great songs, but I think I'll go with Joy in Repitition. It's a hard choice

I've never made a connection between the two, except for the vibe that toejam mentioned (fucking GREAT Org name ). I adore both songs

Has anybody ever mentioned about the similarities between JIR and WDC? If you listen very closely you will hear subtle connections. Listen to the tone and phrasing of his voice during JIR and sing WDC over the top of it. The rhythmic composition is related also. again, it takes a keen ear (try the "she said love me" part as a starter. Then what about the emotion fuelled guitar solo mixed deep into the mix weaving in and out of the moans? Of course JIR has a base line.. and we all know the story of WDC. I genuinely believe they are related. JIR is WDC as an adult if that makes sense. Don't dismiss it.. give it a try
