Is it the sexual aspect? Alot of people have claimed that Prince somehow fell off - Particularly with the release of Planet Earth.
Personally, over the last couple of weeks I have really come to enjoy Planet Earth, especially the retail version as the fidelity is hands down better than anything that was available for download. I would certainly rank PE comparable to past efforts including For You, Parade, Gold, ect. So - is it the lack of overt sexuality that people are complaining about? Is it the Prince of Erotic City that people have come to expect and are they disappointed when they dont get it?

No. It's the lack of time spent crafting decent lyrics (at least, that's my beef with the album). Planet Earth and Resolution, in particular, are so juvenile and simple (as in simple-minded) that I'd be embarrassed to play them for anyone who wasn't a total diehard. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's just his music has no surprises, or moments where you think "a-ha! That is genius" anymore. Well, apart from "Black Sweat" on the last album. I thought that had it. But mainly, his material sounds like a throwback to bad eighties music these days. Unlike his own eighties stuff. I'm having a lie down, I never write posts that long

I actually was goin to post that i love this album... its no purple rain .. but i truly believe it is the most enjoyable album since GOLD for me ... i love the first song and the last song . simplistic? yeah ... but it works ... in my opinion ... as a "concept" album... and it isnt too preachy like some of his religious attempts...

It's not so much the missing sex as the missing quality. When Prince threw his nasty ways out the door, he apparently tossed out his drive to write a decent song too. People wouldn't bitch and complain so much about the "clean" Prince v2.0 if Planet Earth hadn't been so boring. Chelsea Rodgers was sweet though "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I agree. It isn't "Purple Rain"... but I really don't expect any other album 2b. But there was something special about it that I picked up right away. In fact, I don't think I really cared too much about whether or not it has "genius" written all over it. What really made it work for me was that he had fun with it, he wrote music for the love ot it & the dedication he has to his heart. It seemed to symbolize the way I perceived Prince the first time I saw his face, but without the arrogance. Among the others I own, I'd rank it pretty highly. It'd be probably above the level I put ATWIAD & Controversy on and even above where I place Musicology & Dirty Mind. Very high up, but not quite up there with 1999, Purple Rain, TGE & Come (those are my top 4). had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

The ones that are complaining miss that "don't give a damn" Prince that said and did what ever he felt like doing, I think the sexuality had a lot to do with it, losers living vicariously thru him.

is it . . . ? sounds presumptuous #1
or isn't it, could also be the case. IMO the verdict is still way out on PE. and i don't appreciate anyone (nothing personal)prematurely "stamping" this new release w/a soylent kiss. personally, the first half of the album is more interesting to me. there seems to be more INTENTION in the first five songs. i also like Lion of Judah (mainly lyrics). but the first five songs WORK. they rank up there w/the rest of P's work for me. then, the 2nd half of the album seems to sort of deflate, like maybe he got tired in Vegas while recording it. it CAN'T have been easy to make this album while doing that stint in Vegas. i think it's just an attempt to RELEASE where he's at for now, which i appreciate. and it's also quite a POSITIVE album for P. he/his music seem a bit more playful than some times in the past. perhaps he's taking himself less seriously. it's important to also try to walk a mile in someone's mocassins before judging them. remember he just divorced and has been on the road non-stop for almost a year, superbowl, etc. he's been a very busy man. and i'll stick up for him in an instant.
