Sad Prince songs that oddly enough sometimes make you happy

Have you ever just been so into the music that even though the lyrics don't fit your mood, the music gets to you?

Example...

When You Were Mine is really a sad song about a pretty messed up situation if you stop to think about it yet the music is so catchy and upbeat,it's hard to be in a sad mood while listening 2 it.

Another one for me is Another Lonely Christmas. Not only is it one of,if not THE saddest song Prince has ever written,it's also IMO one of Prince's most beautiful, soulful compositions ever. While there is an air of sorrow to it musically, the passionate vocals and epic feel of it lifts me up sometimes. The same thing can be said about the extended portion of Thieves in the Temple.

Can anybody else relate to this at all?

Yeah, I know exactly what u mean with "When U were mine," that song never made me sad.
And also "Thieves in the Temple"... the end gets 2 me a little, but its so upbeat that's hard 2b sad over it.

"Dolphin," I enjoyed and never really saw the sadness in it. (until recently)

The whole "Come" album is supposed be a little sad... but one time I listened 2 it (after it caused me a little grief... being "the death of Prince" and everything)... I had such a good time and it really cheered me up.

"Gold," I recently uncovered a sadder interpretation of it, but it really made me happy whenever I listened 2 it b4 that. Just something magical & uplifting about it.

Sometimes It Snows In April is the quintessential sad Prince song. It's beautifully celebratory of love and life; somberly reflective, serene, poetic, and wise.

I've never heard a song so perfectly capture the tragedy of loss while at the same time encapsalating the beauty of the experience itself. It's one of Prince's greatest ballads. I always cry at the final words.

The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

That's what I've heard.

I'll have 2 get back 2 u guys about that after I get "Parade".

All I have 2 go on is the little segment @ the end of the movie... but that does bring a tear 2 my eye on occasion... cuz they unnecessarily killed him off... could have picked a better ending, its totally anti-climatic.

They said that "When Doves Cry" is a tearjerker and it's very sentimental and stuff.

That song has never really made me too sad about anything. I'm too busy basking in the beauty of it... and picking out all the different instruments and stuff... and picking up the many diff. vocals he used... it's too amazing to really be sad over.

If anything, I feel it 4 a moment, considering the current circumstances in the movie... but once that moment passes, I enjoy it like there's no tomorrow. cool

I know what you mean, music is charming...it takes you all over your heart...
Prince's music brings some kind of emotion, even if it doesn't match your mood at the time.
I can't think of the bands name but I love that happy song called, "Bad Luck."
that's what ya got, that's what ya got...Bad Luck.

I guess the song "Still Waiting" I've totally felt like that before in my teenage years ALOT! Even though I guess the subject matter can be considered depressing...I know that situation was for me...but it seems so sweet, hopeful and innocent that it doesn't make me sad.

I have two for this one: "It's Gonna Be Lonely" -- It absolutely rips your heart apart and yet you have to jam the whole way through, but especially the end. The notes, the harmony, the guitar...he takes my breath away.

Also, "The Love We Make"-- I call it one of those "end of the world" songs. It is such a somber but true message. But just like IGBL, I get so wrapped up in it that even though it's sad, I feel so uplifted with the message and the music. I am taken to a different place where there is only me, him, and the music. The climax of this song gives me feel like the exact moment when good conquers evil. He sings it with such passion, that I think he feels that way, too. It's really hard to put into words, but it's written all over my soul. I could listen to these cuts over and over again.

___ I love these two songs....feel exactly the same way..

the bit in 'the love we make' where he sings 'precious is the baby with a mother' is just beautiful...

I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man. Taking the lyrics alone, it's a real sad story. But the sound of it makes me very happy! cloud9

I'm about to cry just reading these post! sad

But when I read the title of this thread immediately I thought of "Sometime It Snows In April",when I first heard this song I started to think of my grandmother and uncle who passed a year apart{they also loved Prince} it brought me 2 tears the first couple of listens. But now I just enjoy it and sing along wit it {I can sing it just like him,but that's another story biggrin} just beautiful! I also suddenly thought of "It's Gonna Be Lonely" drooling this song is so breathtakingly beautiful it's hard to even try 2 put it in words. Prince voice on this song in the falsetto it's so light and emotional, put it with the light airy music it = cloud9 I don't think this song is as sad as the 1st one I talked about, but it makes you think "Goodness how could she leave this man who is pouring his heart out sad ". Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!
surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
I ain't felt this way in years...

I'll also add the joyful noise of Prince's version of Do Yourself A Favor! Kinda like When You Were Mine,it tells of a bad relationship but is done in such an exhuberant way that you forget how somewhat bitter the lyrics are at times.

I'd put 17 Days in that category as well. The words are about a depressing, lonely situation but the music puts me in such a great mood.

oh yeah, love that song! cool

But it was the b-side of "When Doves Cry"... that's supposedly a sad song... but it hasn't really made me get teary-eyed at all.

"17 days" just gets me.

Moonbeam Levels seems kinda sad 2 me, but at the same time, very uplifting.
