How long do you listen to a new Prince album...

Before you go back to your favorite? I listen to each new album until I have it memorized. Although sad to say Planet Earth I didn't do that with.

I can honestly say... with Planet Earth, I devoted a week 2 it... and gave it only 3 listens before I came crawling back to "Purple Rain" or whatever album I checked into...

it was "Come." @ the time, I figured I was long overdue to check back into prince's era. And actually, I checked out 1999 before that.

But yeah, I gave Planet Earth three listens b4 crawling back.
And it wasn't because I didn't like the album. I loved it. I guess I backed off because I didn't want the thrill to wear off too fast.

But when I get a new album, I usually do give it three listens or so before returning to something I've had a while... or I end up mixing & matching the two together...

That's how I roll.

I used 2 do that... when I only had 6 albums, lol...

ever since my collection got bigger, I've gone months w/o listening to certain albums.

Musicology, I seem 2 love 2 shelf a lot... just so it doesn't get too old 4 me.
3121... I used 2 play a lot cuz I wanted to love it like I did the first time around... not the case.

I didn't really do that with "Diamonds & Pearls", I mean, I know which songs I like and don't (all except Jughead, lol)... but I've never had the time (and the place) to really mull it over, lyrics & all.

I gave Planet Earth 3 listens after I got it... and when I get back to it, I'll definitely spend a lot of time thinking over the lyrics and such.

i remember when i 1st got the Black Album, i absorbed that like a sponge (cause back then.. the album was black market and i got it in 1989) and i wanted to know why Prince re-called it.. and after i listened to it.. i was scared of Prince lol.. i was like "what..in the whofarted" especially on that song.. 'SuperFunkyCali".. im glad though Prince is normal.. he's not out there like some other artists

It takes about a month before I can solidify an opinion. Then I'll take a month off before revisiting. I'm again bumpin' "Planet Earth" in my car after a short break.

How long would you think one should spend with a new album?

I mean, I'm always trying to figure out how I feel whenever I can and move onto the next.
I've gotten 15 albums over 6 months, but I still haven't listened to 2 of them (SOTT and that "obscure mystery" album I'm gonna tease u guys with)...
actually, I haven't returned 2 Rave after the first shot either...

But I learn really fast and when my albums come in 2's (as they usually do), I rotate between them. That's what I did when I got Dirty Mind & Controversy. I must have rotated those 2 for a week or two before moving onto something else.

Do you think I'm being ridiculous and should really stick 2 one album for every 2-3 weeks? haha... falloff

Usually for several weeks. Then I am usually on the something else.
By then I know all the song lyrics, etc.

Then the new Prince records gets to be part of my regular music archive and when the mood hits me I play selections from it when needed.

For instance in the last week I have been going thru Batman, Lovesexy, and Emancipation songs.

Planet Earth, combined with The Truth, Rave and D&P, feels right with a few songs from prince.

Its constantly evolving, the musical combinations, which is great.

So any new Prince music just get thrown into the mix of the musical soundtrack of my life. It all has a place, somewhere to go.

Some PE may sound good with some C&D songs too.

I still was kinda new to prince at the time, but one time, I mixed and matched its songs with Come & TGE... that was an interesting and fun little experiment. Some of the songs just fit together so well.
