As you said, he does have his Internet thing going on, but it seems to me ( and I think you agree) that the marketing just isn't up to par. He probably isn't hiring people who are seriously knowledgable about Internet marketing. The analogy I'll use is wedding photography: folks will spend thousands of dollars on a wedding and then not want to hire a photographer because of the expense and because "my cousin has a great camera...he can do it." Well, guess what? Cousin doesn't know the first thing about light, design, depth of field, etc. Yes, he knows "something" about photography...if you press this button you will get some kind of picture. Prince's seem to know "something" about the Internet. There was a comment earlier regarding his site and the use of flash not being the best choice. I don't know about that in particular, but to me his site looks very amatuer. Lastly, I remember him commenting in an interview that he doesn't own an iPod...like it was a badge of honor or something...ok...I'm 46...my daughter convinced my husband that he had to get me one for Christmas...it sat on my desk for 4 months whille I kept lugging my CD case back and forth to work...in and out of the car...I just kept resisting...finally, just because I didn't want to be wasteful I figured out how to use it...woohoo...Prince, really, get an iPod...they come in all colors-including purple... Why endorse Apple without a fee? You don't see pro-basketball players dropping the name of Nike just for the heck of it. It's not that he doesn't have an ipod, just not doing free advertising. Honestly, as a result of this site, as I've stated, I've made many purchases of Prince products I wouldn't have, otherwise. I don't like the idea of his causing problems for something to his advantage. Prince.org adheres to his and his attorney's expectations. As much as a pain in the ass it is. [Edited 9/5/07 20:58pm] You're right...Excellent point!

I agree with the original person who posted. My boyfriend (finally!) really likes Prince's music, and wants to explore all of P's talents, but it's kinda hard to get him into some of the points I'm trying to make b/c so much is inaccessible. And I know, I know, like someone said, when you "sign up" to be a fan of Prince, you *have* to recognize he is self-absorbed and in his own world, but it is a shame that he is being so paranoid/selfish/money-smart (whatever you want to label his recent actions).
In saying these things, I am not saying that I am quitting being a fan, but it reaches a point where, like many people on here have noted, that I have spent a good amount of my hard-earned money supporting his career, that a little thanks or appreciation wouldn't be a bad thing. Hopefully, like much of what Prince does, this is just a passing phase of sorts, and that in his own way, when he re-releases stuff or whatever, that he adds more stuff to it! (And if I ever *did* leave this site, I hope someone wouldn't just kick me out tha door!!) That's my 2 cents. ~ ~Karebear~

It is difficult to understand your view, you seem to miss the point which is that Prince has a right to "own" his property and protect it from the "Pirates" like You Tube and other sites; which undoubtedly secure advertising $$ revenue off of their sites, but most likely don't share their $$ with Prince or any other artist. This my dear is called leaching. It seems to me that Prince is simply trying to cut-out the middle man (or at the very least, get the respect due him). This has nothing to do with fans. The fans are unfortunately caught in the cross-hairs. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Simply put, would you like a stranger to come into your house and set up their stuff in your bedroom and act as though you're not there--invite friends over, have parties, leave dirty dishes all around, etc.--I highly doubt it. I was speaking more along the lines of videos and interviews that just aren't available to the public. Prince refuses to let us have anything to begin with. He could be making a load of money off us if he'd only give us access, online, instore, or otherwise. So we can't have the goodies for free, and we can't even pay for the goodies if we want them. It doesn't make any sense, and what he's been doing isn't going to gain him anything but a bunch of annoyed fans. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I'm 30 and the Internet barely existed when I was in Jr. High. Now in college - there are courses that teach students how to market products properly on the Internet, it's a huge difference to people that are even 10 years apart in age. Prince tried to do his little Internet thing, what 10 years ago? He just simply didn't get it. Sorry. Shit, I'm 22 and I don't really understand the internet. I know that's a bit of a rarity in my generation, but there are more people 35 + that don't get it than there are those that do. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

From the begining I, and i thought most Prince fans took for granted that prince was not right in the head, and that was cool thoe. He has awed me many times, amazed me countless times! But... also had me shaking my head in disbelief or had me thinking WTF just as many times. That has been the routine for me from day one anyway. Never did i think he was like my other musicians i also love,....the down to earth coolness of say Bruce Springsteen, I admire him not just for his great music, but the way he caries himself. I dont begrudge prince for being like him, hes cool in own unique way. . "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I have been a fan since 1982. But I must say that after 25 years of listening to your music and following your every move, I am officially done. One person can take only so much crap from an artist that likes to think he is different than the Recording Industry that he fights so often. What do I mean by this? Well you have said that you are a "slave" to the evil record company and that you were not born to do their bidding. A lot of people were on your side and understood and still understood what you were fighting for. And I commend you for attempting to change the industry. But by you attacking INDEPENDENT fan sites, that are there to build and drive communities where the sole subject is you, is ludicrous! And it makes you no better than the companies that you "slave" to. Prince wants to control everything that has his image, nay his name on it. What is next? Are you going to attempt to trademark the word Prince, so no one can use it in a sentence? This sounds ridiculous, but so are you for demanding these sites to take down images of you as well. If I ran sites like Housequake.com or Prince.org, I would simply shut them down. These sites generate tons more traffic than your 3121.com does. (By the way, everyone knows it is horrible design sense to use only flash for one's website.) Shut them down I say, and let's see who's talking about Prince this time next year. Start listening to your fans, and stop treating them like criminals. The Prince I grew to love and follow was a maverick, not a dictator. You have become our Warner Brothers Records, and your fans your "slaves". But not me, not anymore. HMMMMM he hasnt cancelled his account yet

What is a real friend etc.? Someone who sticks by you, defends you and all the rest, even if they feel you have not done the same. And before you jump in, I am not necessarily saying I am a real friend/fan/whatever. I am just considering what a real friend/fan/whatever would, imho, be doing. "Mr Simms doesn't want it. He doesn't want to be labelled, 'Still worthy of being a Baard Man'. Huh? 'Baard Man' what the hell is that? You hurt this boy, you're gonna be bad bums the lot of ya!" (Scent of a Woman). --------

some people take it so serious!
i use his music and song by song. i enjoy him in live shows. I take the postive and forget about the negative...especially when i dont have the power to change it. i think he listens to fans and just remember when most agreed on not liking JW speeches on TRC or sick of the jazz insrumental and that he should do more commercial music and he brought Musicology. then a lot of people said it was ok but too light comercial and wanted some old badass music and he came with 3121 song. A LOT of people asked for rock and guitar shit and he did the FURY SNL...now he released a kinda rck album, PE. i think he does listen to fans sometimes but concerning to music. the business its HIS BUSINESS, like it or not.

I understand the concept of being disappointed with Prince and his control needs.
Now is a good time to mention: this site allows opinions and objections to his actions. Under no uncertain terms would I encourage anyone to leave Prince.org because they have an unpopular view. Otherwise, this would be 3121.org. Ya know? Maybe Prince will get the message and find ways to accommodate those who love to see him, hear his music, and have done so for years even when he wasn't so popular.

I think that the Internet is getting a bad rap. The same reason why artists performed on Solid Gold in the 80s and American Idol now - or do interviews on TV or in magazines is to promote themselves. Pushing around some videos on YouTube I would think is more of a vehicle for promotion not robbery. Inevitably, someone checks out your stuff for free, likes it and then begins making purchases to satisfy their new found need/desire. It's Marketing 101. I don't think Prince understands the Internet...I don't think many 50 year olds do. People are paid to appear on television shows, heck, even the people on Jerry Springer get paid! Perhaps its not just the $$. The very thing you (and those like you) say you love about Prince...standing up to the Industry....is the very thing you don't comprehend. In the big people's world we understand the issue. (Say what you mean and mean what you say!) When you grow up and get a real job, I think you'll understand. Marketing 101 is about selling your product, creating a brand and promoting the brand. Generally these decisions are made by the product owner. I don't want something for nothing.. just something at all! I am a (relatively) "newer" (or younger) P. fan that was just a little kid when all of the awesome 80s stuff that he did came about. So I don't have the kick-ass collections that some other fans have, and would like to enjoy something now and again. It's painfully taunting sometimes when people talk about their rare videos or songs that they have collected, and all I have to really enjoy are the mainstream videos... Makes me sad, that's all, I like P., too!~ I just try to be an optimist, and hope it'll all come back around in the future..~ (Ahh, but alas, I know, I know, he's his own person and do whatever the heck he pleases.. sigh)~ ~Karebear~
