MJ & Prince..1979..Who was Funkier??

I'm NOT trying 2 start another one of those MJ vs Prince threads. So Please no Hating here. smile

I have been listening 2 'Off The Wall' a lot lately. I was thinking if ever there was a year where MJ was funkier than Prince this Might have been the year. Prince put out 'Prince' in this same year. But I think the Funk edge would have 2 go 2 MJ in this year..

What do U guys think??

Lets keep it strictly 1979..all years b4 or after are irrelevant. cool

I'd have to agree with you that Off The Wall is the funkier album.

I've heard that Prince adopted the "dirty" image from watching Rick James. I wonder what might've happened otherwise . . .

prince influences are way broader than MJs

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Sexy Dancer" are mega funky. However, the same can be said about "Working Day And Night" and "Get On The Floor." Plus, Louis Johnson played on Off The Wall, Q produced the album, and Michael's voice is perfection on every song, so I'm gonna stick with MJ for that year. smile

Michael Jackson.

Prince (the album) has some funky moments, but it doesn't have Louis 'Thunder Thumbs' Johnson playing bass on it cool

Cool FuNkenseiN. cool Those Basslines on 'Off The Wall' were killer! Prince was still a young Jedi Knight in '79. Meanwhile Lord Quincy Jones & MJ were "Strong in the Force" of Funk. lol

I am an MJ fan as well, and I don't admitting that "Sexy Dancer" is funkier than anything on Off the Wall. Plus, with "Bambi" Prince rocks harder too.
"New Power slide...."

Funk to me is people that play..Mike had the vocal thing down COLD ! on that album..and the rhythm in his body..but if you left him in the studio with a bass..drums..some keyboards, guitars and a mic..he would only be able to make rough sketches that could only give a TRUE FUNKATEER something to work off of..so If this thread is strictly about FONK, Prince gets my vote ! wink

prince has been is and will always be funkier than MJ.

another thing would be who had more funky songs released by 79

if u set a comp of who is funkier prince would kick MJ ass so bad no question, so what?

I agree with ur 1st statement. But ur 2nd sentence is VERY debatable seeing that MJ was in the Music game looooong b4 Prince. And made some arguably funky Albums with J5. But I said I didn't wanna get into anything other than '79..but thats a good idea 4 another thread.. biggrin

MJ. nod

If I HAD to choose between Off The Wall and Prince, it would definitely be OTW. And I would never say that about any other album in MJ's career that came out the same year as a Prince one.

I have always believe funk/R&B was MJ true calling, after all he learnt from the master himself, JB.

Snap

"I Wanna Be Your Lover" knocked "Off The Wall" out of the #1 spot (USA R&B Charts)
'nuff said! razz

seriously tho, Prince is a product put out by a one-man band, literally
with one or two exceptions, the compositions are far superior

thats what i was saying but my english sucks. even tho' MJ was not the one making the songs or playing the instruments on those albums. lets go back to 79 and put both in a studio and ask them to make a funky album. lets see who is funkier. how do we measure that??? thats a phd thesis
