Prince Dissed by Rolling Stones Readers

I logged onto RollingStone.com to check out the readers' picks for the top 100 albums of all time.

I fulfilled my obligation as a fan and voted for Sign O' The Times when the voting was going on.

Seems that every album by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones was on there...not to mention Eminem's NEW album making the top 25 and Madonna's "Music" being in there also.

Yet...Prince was there only ONCE...with Purple Rain coming in at #66!!! SOTT wasn't even there...yet U2's Joshua Tree was #4!!! WTF?!?!?!?

Those polls are so stupid, it's not even funny.

That's not true at all. Listen people just aren't Aware of his new stuff or what he is doing anymore. If people don't hear you on the Radio they basically forget about you except your fans who Never do.

Oh how the times have changed!!!

I remember back in '90, Rolling Stone looked back at the decade before naming the top 100 albums of the 80's and Prince had 4 albums on that list.

If memory serves, London Calling by the Clash was number one followed by Purple Rain at number 2, and The Joshua Tree by U2 at number 3.

I can't remember there rankings, but I believe the other Prince albums on that list were, Dirty Mind, Sign 'O' the Times, and 1999. I know I'm biased, but I think those albums would easily make a top 100 list of all time!

if i remember correctly, 3 of the albums made the top RS top 100 about 2 years ago when they ranked the all-time best albums. this is just a fan poll on a website. nothing to fret about.

It didn't suprise me that only ONE Prince album made it. Rolling Stone readers aren't that familiar (overall) with Prince's work. It is definitely a more "progressive"/rock audience.

I think if the same poll was done by Vibe, Sign "O" the Times as well as Purple Rain, Dirty Mind and maybe one more of his albums would have been recognized.

I went through this poll also. Bowie only had one album as well. Yet Weezer has 2. It's slanted towards young taste and super old classics. Artists with a big fanbase had more representation like U2 with 6 entries and Madonna with 4. No big whoop.

His fans praise him by paying up to $150.00 a ticket to see him in concert. I cannot think of anymore praise than that.

When are you going to post a comment that makes sense?

London Calling is a magnificent album. Passionate, intelligent and terrific fun all at the same time. It's a better album than Purple Rain and The Joshua Tree. I think SOTT is a better album though...just!

What's wrong with Purple Rain and 1999 being on there? They WERE fantastic albums! For the record, I'd be willing to bet that many of the people complaining havent even heard almost all the other albums on the list. So how do they even know without a doubt that Prince's stuff is better?

Its kind of biased to simply proclaim rolling stone readers retards just because they dont share the same musical tastes as you.

You guys have to remember this poll represents a certain demographic of RS readers/fans of their site. To me it's really no surprise. In the past the critics have always listed about 4 different Prince albums as one of the best of the year/best of the year/best of all time, etc. But Rolling Stone today is a VERY different magazine than it once was, and it's hard for me to take them seriously.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Music popularity is very political and at least 80% image and the music often doesn't matter when it comes to these polls. He would do very well in a Critics poll.
