One's livelyhood in the world of bootlegging...

I'm going to jump on the other side of the fence or at least try.

There must be some sort of excitement behind hiding a recording devise and knowing by the end of a show that you now have something very special.

First trying to get in past security...where do you guys hide those things? (god, I'm dying to know). Then the rush once you know you're in for the show. Next all you have to do is find a good spot and hit record...

When the music is at an alltime high, you think to yourself... I'm so cool, I can play this when I get home. Wait till my friends hear this!

I imagine that there are a lot of bootleggers that really get a thrill out of this. And I know so many of you out there in music land love your special bootleg collection. And I'm sure, as I have been told SEVERAL times that I am missing out BIGTIME. I'm sure. But just because you have this passion does not make it right. Just because some artists don't mind, doesn't make it right either.

I do agree, however, that this should be sending a big message back to people such as prince..."release more music".

And some have said that Prince is doing this for media attention. Doubt it. All he has to do is an interview for attention. Maybe bootleggers are so obsessed that they will do anything to meet him.

Im sure its a lonely hobby--I doubt they have many friends who care about Prince...a live performance.. so they are going home listening themselves and making the copies etc, tape masters or whatever...and its funny when u think of it..that you cant record what happens in free contained air space lol..its like the artist or whomever owns the the soundwaves that enter ones ears etc...they own the night, the reaction, the senses..

Berry, Berry, Berry...bootlegs are beautiful and wonderful creations. Perhaps if you didn't spend your spare time sweeping up at Paisley Park, you'd know that. wink

I used to make bootlegs when i went to Rock City (very famous UK music venue) Problem is i got bored and wanted to go up front and mosh. I think most bootleggers attend more than one show of each tour. There is no way you can keep still otherwise when your favourite act is on stage! You know its like, you have to know when everything is gonna happen.

It's better that you don't have any boots, Berry. Once you get one, you crave 600 more. It's a sickness, really. Kinda like sweeping up at Paisley Park. lol

I can imagine you working for the Inquisition during the Middle ages, torturing poor people to force them to admit that they treat with the devil & that they have bootlegs

I have a clean conscience. Ugly is right when saying it's a sickness. I'm much happier sweeping up after your dirty bottoms than breaking very crystal clear ethical boundries.

Afterall sweeping and cleaning is a lot harder work than pushing a button...and a lot more honest...

I have taped concerts in the past, never Prince though, only artists that allow it. I've no need to be caught and get my taping devices taken away or being kicked out of a venue.

The thing is I hate taping. It distracts you from the show, you're incredibly self-conscious in that you don't want to make any noises to disturb the recording, you get annoyed by people around you who are simply having a good time and clap or shout loud.
No, I've stopped taping years and years ago and I don't think I'll ever do it again.

Personally I have no moral issues with live recordings floating around the fan community. I think it's free publicity for the artist. I also never buy a bootleg, I either trade it or download it.

Yes, I am for real. The day I helped out at PP allowed me to get to know 2 video engineers and what their profession is like and how their comps work. How all the soundstage equiptment is set up and torn down (really interesting to me) lighting etc...I was being productive which makes me feel good. Being an actor and into the arts, I like to see all aspects and learn as much as I can. If that's just too simple for you joey, than that says more about you than me lol

What I was trying to say is that you should lighten up. There are much worse things going on in the world than people buying/trading bootlegs and frankly you act like you're miss perfect. I'm sure there's stuff you do or have done that's questionable as well to say the very least.

Fans who have bootlegs are very honest about it. We have bootlegs, not because of some cheap thrill (as you and Prince both seem to think), not out of disrespect for the artist, but because we love the music. Plain and simple. The reason why we won't stop buying bootlegs is because it does not harm Prince. Sure, if it was up to us we'd prefer not to depend on bootleggers for this material, but that's just the way it is. If I can get something from an ex-Paisley employee, bootlegger or anyone else who has something interesting to offer I will take it.

If that means crossing "clear ethical boundaries" so be it. People who get on their litte soapbox and preach about morals, values tend to be hypocrites anyway.

"miss perfect" ? eek

I do things that are questionable...I just don't try to justify to myself or others...

PS: I'm going to go to sleep on a nice pile of bootlegs now. I think I'll use "The Work: Volumes 1-5" as a pillow and I'll fashion the Xenophobia discs into a nice warm blanket. Zzzz. I hope I don't have any unethical nightmares...
