The Mansion! The Mansion
Prince’s career as an architectural metaphor is a multi-dimensional mansion. As a listener, it has been a journey alongside of a soulful designer. The 1978 driveway, "For You," leads to a sound foundation with rock solid rhythms such as; “I wanna be your lover, Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999.” Amongst the floors of the 80’s, carpeted with “ Purple Rain,” are hallway’s that map, “Around the world in a day,” “Sign O’ the times,” “Lovesexy,” and “Parade.” “Graffiti Bridge,” allows “Batman,” to glide into the 90’s corridor lined with a walkway of, “Diamonds and Pearls,” wallpapered with, “Black,” and “Gold,” symbolism where the caped crusader could make sense of the, “Chaos and Disorder,” and emancipating us with, “The Truth.” Coming through the crystal ballroom, we are escorted into a new decade, illuminated by the arched doorway of, “The Rainbow Children,” that lead to passages in any direction. “One Night Alone,” in this mansion of song titles such as; “Musicology, Black Sweat, and Planet Earth,” allow the tourist to glance inside a moment of the artist’s mind. The mansion contains a basement full of bootlegs, “The Vault,” full of hidden treasures, and a Cathedral of possibilities still waiting in empty wings. “Come.” To the mansion.
