L4OATheOriginal said: this is the 1st album that i have walked in2 my local wrecka stow, and the people that work in there now I like prince and jokingly told them 2 take down the display they had. the people that work there were like "yeah this is a horrendous album and it's not flying off the shelves like 3121" - But it´s funny. I think PE should be real good for the non-fans. It´s very accessible, melodic. Most people hate his ´weird´ side and PE should be perfect for them. I don´t call it ´horrendous´ but a ´basic´ album.

Interesting. Blender magazine shit all over it; they gave it a horrendous 1.5 stars out of five. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

If you find these tunes constantly stuck in your head - humming them while you are at work, helping you feel better and getting you through the day, then I say it's worth something, wouldn't you? I understand this album doesn't have the same effect on all people, but for some (like myself and a handful of critics) we get the purpose of PE. How it makes you feel is what it's all about.

I simply think its a pretty good album.. not great.. but pretty good. Critics are as critics do. Some will like it.. others will hate it. Isn't that generally how it goes any way..? so why would a Prince album be any different from the rest.
And just because someone doesn't like the album.. does not mean that its a bad album or that those who do like it are deranged or something. Just different strokes for different folks.

Curious how Spin now joins Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly as raving about Planet Earth. It has been a long time since so many high-profile U.S. music pubs have praised a Prince album so highly. Personally, post the early 1990s, I prefer 3121, Rainbow Children, Crystal Ball and Gold. Any theories on why these mags are so enthralled with Planet Earth, especially when the British pubs were not as kind? Maybe it was his Super Bowl performance that just won him back a lot of the love he had lost and now it is carrying over to his album reviews?
Peace, Scott I agree. From what I've heard-- admittedly limited-- I hear nothing special about any of these songs. cause they r smoking when they r listening 2 it. if they were sober they would hear how crappy this album truly is

reviews are pointless. discussions about albums are pointless. yet they will always happen... the internet has destroyed musical appreciation.. people come on here and bitch the hell out of everything prince does... what the fuck are you on here for?
and i know exactly the response im gonna get from the above... but fact is.. prince is a better musician than any of u, and he knows what he wants and what he wants to release.. if u dont like it fuck off!

"Quit twigglin' his balls!", as my grandfather liked to say. I'm sorry. You asked for that response. And, I'm pretty sure that there are some "TRUE" musicians on this website that wouldn't take too kind to those words. I'm not saying that "Prince" isn't. Hell, he is a master at what he does. Any "good" album he does these days will surely get some praise from me. But, it "REALLY" isn't mandatory, anymore. He's had his fair share of masterpieces. I say, if he does well, copasetic. If not, his career still lives. So, what's wroing with general consensus, huh?

Just got the September issue of Sound & Vision and they also rave about PE. They selected it as their Reference CD of the month and awarded it 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. They feel Prince has rediscovered his sense of melody and laud Wendy & Lisa's contribution.
Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

ppl can't ever be satisfied- u argue when there are bad reviews and when there are good ones. i don't really read magazine reviews, but from what i've seen, alot of people like the album. "So shall it be written, so shall it be sung..."

That's what I find about this album. It's genuinely catchy. Even if I didn't want to like The 1 U Wanna C because it's pure sugar, it's the best pop song he's done since Cream. Resolution was described by Anx as something Cartman would sing on South Park, and even though he's right, that song is stuck in my head too. 3121 flowed easier & more naturally than Musicology, and this album flows even easier. And most importantly, the production feels more organic, no synth or guitar lines hurt my ears. I don't think it's groundbreaking in any way, it's just Prince making good music and seeming to let it happen naturally. My Legacy

Well damn . . . FunkyB! I actually agree to a large degree. Planet Earth is a really good album. I give it a B+. Much better than "3121" The only two tunes on Rave that I thought were cool were "Undisputed" and "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore." The rest were just Ok. From title track to last note played - Planet Earth is a good CD from mainstream listeners to avid Prince fans. So, why not receive good reviews! Get the funk up!

I just read the review. I don't place that much stock in those things (I remember a big review in the LA Times declaring John Wesley Harding the first great artist of the 90's) but it's nice to see anyway. He gets plenty of good reviews, but rarely does such a big magazine say he's done "the best pop album of the year."
More amazing was that they didn't call Planet Earth a "return to form after last year's disappointing 3121." My Legacy
