SPIN Raves About Planet Earth ... U.S. Review Theories? Just got my new issue of Spin magazine and they not only give Planet Earth 4 1/2 stars and call it the pop album of the year, but they also made it the main, lead album review of the month. Curious how Spin now joins Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly as raving about Planet Earth. It has been a long time since so many high-profile U.S. music pubs have praised a Prince album so highly. Personally, post the early 1990s, I prefer 3121, Rainbow Children, Crystal Ball and Gold. Any theories on why these mags are so enthralled with Planet Earth, especially when the British pubs were not as kind? Maybe it was his Super Bowl performance that just won him back a lot of the love he had lost and now it is carrying over to his album reviews?
Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

Peace, Scott I'm reading Gael Greene's memoir right now, and she has a quote from a British guy talking about a popular New York restaurant in the 80s. He basically says he thinks Americans reject perfection, and more often gravitate towards things that are evolving works of art rather than finalized, polished visions. That restaurants in London make people feel like "extras" rather than "participants." Could this apply to Planet Earth? I dunno, just floating a theory [Edited 8/27/07 8:04am]

Peace, Scott cause they r smoking when they r listening 2 it. if they were sober they would hear how crappy this album truly is man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I think to people looking at it from a fresh or neutral perspective, Planet Earth sounds like a solid album of NEW Prince. Some of my friends find it a bit too soft, mellow, and harmless. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Well Prince is HOT property right now that's why, everybody loves a winner. Some of those people weren't even born back in the 80's when Prince was much hotter than he is now. but I'm very happy for him, I love to hear good thingS. Thanks

i dont know maybe it's become PC to give him props now, i'm thinking the same album would have been trashed in the mid 90's, the Gold Experience kicks the shit out of this album. Dolphin is better than anything on PE, Shhhhh vs. Future Baby Mama, not even close. Chelsea is a JAM and would fit anywhere during any stage of his career.

They all raved about Musicology, too. I think the fact that the music industry -- along with its "product" -- has more or less turned to shit may have something to do with it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Ok, now I KNOW we live on different planets I'm not saying either one's better...just reeeeallly different. On my planet, Rave is the most uninspired CD he's ever recorded.

It appears as if Prince has just been acknowleged as a unique musician/
lyricist...that he has been literally set aside at times, by a no-fault reaction of the writers. In my opinion, I believe both fear and love in the mind of the writer contribute to either an accurate attempt at criticism, or a delay, due to contemplating their own personal qualifications to speak on his level of artistic development. - I agree. Like I say: "PE is his best and worst album at the same time". In one hand, it´s very melodic, well produced and accessible. On the other hand, it was the first Prince album that I didnt have any excitement listening to. And has some of the worst lyrics he ever did.

As a former journalist, I can tell you most of 'em ain't that deep. And they almost never think they're beneath rendering an opinion based on their own qualifications.
