There are two versions of the song. The original is from 1985/86 when Prince was with Susanah, dealing with their break up. The newer version is from 1995 with Prince and the New Power Trio(Michael Bland and Sonny T.) The is an outtake and you can find both versions on the larger 3 disk sets like Dreams, Cosmos, The Work etc.. I love both versions as they have a strong, dreamy air about them.

Empty Room is an outtake first recorded in 1985 with the Revolution. Never used.

Prince re-recorded the song in 1992 for inclusion in the film (and soundtrack) "I'll Do Anything" along with several other songs. Never used, although "The Rest Of My Life," "My Little Pill," "There Is Lonely," and "Don't Talk 2 Strangers" have been released. It is in the vein of the last two songs mentioned in this paragraph.

The original 1985 recording of Empty Room was updated in 1995 and a video was shot. Never used.

Prince played the song on night 7 of the 2002 Celebration.

Unfortunately, the song remains unreleased to this day.

So, now that's out of the way... THIS IS A FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC SONG! FIND IT! I still get goosebumps when I think of him playing it in June. I almost wet myself when he sang the first line. One of my all-time favorite outtakes. FIND IT!

Aaron, he played it tonight for the first London show. An extremely heavy guitar version of it...

The latter half of the setlist looks great! Can't wait for the bootlegs to arrive. wink

(N.B. the "wink" -icon which concludes my comment is meant as a comical remark thus liberating me from all charges of advocating bootlegs and preventing me from getting sued by Prince for $150,000 per song)

Indeed he did play 'Diamonds And Pearls', during his piano sit-down segment.

By the way, I noticed the crowd were static during 'Empty Room', like they didn't know the words to it or like it was really the first time they were hearing this song (looks like we really need to get educated here in the UK...). However, it packed such an emotional punch that the crowd couldn't help but cheer wildly when the song came to an end. I also saw a few tears being shed during Prince's jazzy rendition of 'Gotta Broken Heart Again', very moving rendition it was too.

For the record,Prince played the concluding guitar riff to 'Empty Room' using his purple symbol guitar.

I asked Prince himself in click aftershow "After how well Empty Room went down tonight - are there any plans to put it on an official release?"
Prince smiled and said..

"no".

From the set list, it looks like Prince has started to utilize seminal songs from his his holy triumverate -DM, Controversy and 1999...interesting.

Aaaargh, not what I wanted to hear - I love that song, and I hope it gets a widespread official release someday.

Thank you for asking, though - that is a question I've always wanted to ask him and hear an answer straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak...

Good thing, then, that the sound quality on the available bootleg version of this song is not that bad...
