This one's for Jersey!?

In Chelsea Rogers, what does he mean at the beginning when he says, "This one's for Jersey"?

Does he mean NEW JERSEY, literally?

Or is Jersey some sort of disco slang? I think I've heard it before as slang. And the song is kind of disco-ish (with the hi-hat on the 'and' of every beat).

Well, my only evidence is on the PRINCE PODCAST. The episode where the two guys are discussing Planet Earth. The one dude mentions something like Chelsea Rogers having a real disco sound. A real Jersey thing... ??? Something like that.

In other words, was New Jersey the home of the birth of disco or something?

When Prince says, "this is for Jersey" he is referring to New Jersey which was the birthplace of the garage club sound that dominated the 80's club scene. I'm impressed that he even knew that. Many of the underground club sounds of the 80's originated in the northern NJ area. A primary catalyst to this sound was a group called Blaze who were from the East Orange and Montclair area. I believe their biggest hit back then was call If You Should Need A Friend....go check it out if you can find it.

Maybe he is giving a shout out to NJ. He did live in Rahway NJ for a short period of time when he was shopping his demo to record companies. He stayed with his sister (half sister) in "The Plaza" apartments on the corner of Main and East Hazelwood.

It was a shoutout to JerseyKRS, an Orger.

OK, probably not but still, if I was JerseyKRS, that would be my story.

Actually, it was a shout-out 2 "adorable" (the ORGer who fits her name), who is from Jersey.

; )

Alright HOLD UP.

NYC was the birthplace of Garage, NOT Jersey. It's named after the Paradise Garage, where Larry Levan spun.

Maybe he wanted to ensure record sales in New Jersey so he mentioned the state's name.

Wouldn't be the first time an artist has done something like that.

in jersey the club scene was underground house and dance,,,its always been,,
i think being friends with his female dj helped him discover that scene and he incorporated it in his song
