the james brown-MJ incident

not drunk, high or anything.

my theory is that prince was in the "darling nikki" mood and he tried to do that kinda dance and final scream but few people got it.

that was it...darling nikki rare form that night.

whatever he was channeling it sucked.

I think it showed how important "practice" was to the old Prince. I think the new Prince has perfected improvising so much from all his afterhows, maturing as an artist, etc etc that if placed in the same position, he could pull it off so much better.

No doubt. Prince at the age that JB was on that night would have totally taken over.

I've seen the video clip plenty of times and to me it DOES NOT look like he's under the influence of anything...it's just Prince being Prince, that's how he always acted in that era, he always had that weird/mysterious/sexfreak vibe...I guess the "Darling Nikki" vibe that someone else is referring to... even people around Prince during that era have said P never used drugs. Chick Huntsberry said P didn't do drugs. I have no way of knowing for sure but I just never get the impression that he's high in that clip.

rolleyes again with this.

Bottomline:

Watch the clip again, the key to the whole thing is JB's Band.

For MJ they break it down to this nice slow Blues lick.

Then compare that to when the band does this PCP/Coke/Angel Dust- 275 beats per second... whatever that was eek

No Guitarist could try to put fillers inbetween that mess.

I dont know if the PCP kicked in with James & his Band when Prince was walking on stage or what? But wow can you guys play a little faster with no pauses, so Prince can put something in the middle.

i think its a little sketchy an prince seems a bit edgy, angry . but did his thing anyway ..
prince was young . he was taken off guard .. tell how exactly anyone would be in that situation at that age? ... they would 'SHIT THEM SELFS!!!' .. I think he seems maybe a little adrenalised an unprepared . but think he handled it well an still kicked arse .. in a more NO bs way .. rather than a relaxed prepared way .. I think Prince made James Brown nervous .. which aint easy .. theres the moment where he spins the mic an looks like he planned to do the splits ..but didnt bother an kinda stopped himself half way ... id say he werent warmed up .. he was already relaxed an had his night planned an then this came outta the blue an all of a sudden he was on stage an expecting too do something .. He would handle that kinda thing nowadays. . but was still young an was in shock an good old fashioned nerves an adrenaline were pumping thru his veins ...the whole thing does look kinda bad arsed though an JB an his gang looked a little shocked by what he did .. he didnt seem as approachable as MJ ... an the pulling down the light when he walked off wasnt rehearsed an coulda quite easily have caused a minor riot
whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

r u seriously trying to suggest they weren't really making any room for prince?

I think MJ actually asked them to slow it down for him. when he, himself came on.

Why didn't prince ask them to slow things down?
As I remember he just went on stage, not wanting to shake MJs' hand, didn't know what 2 do and so, grabbed a guitar.

The band were confused. There was a communication breakdown.
P. was on some Trip, either Ego or Drug influenced, it doesn't matter.

Whatever, Prince obviously balls'd it up. "tearing down" the deco on leaving was accidental and due to him rushing off that way.

Hillarious, and very human. I really feel for him when I think of it.
These are the things of life. smile

Hey I think he was just caught a little off guard, and wasn't used to playing with a band that he hadn't rehearsed with. Plus he was on the same stage as the late great James Brown one of his biggest influences so his nerves got to him a lil bit. I think he did pretty good, but when that "Lamp Post" fell I was LMAO! lol

Any other Musician if put in that situation would have been scared as hell. I mean U have 2 follow Michael freakin Jackson at the prime of his career?!

Prince did fine 4 the situation. But as James Brown said...I think MJ just studied James Brown more than Prince did. MJ seemed more relaxed.

Well you don't have to agree with me, just like I don't agree with u. Your the person that needs to get over themselves I don't know why u are trying so hard to convince everyone that he was on drugs. How do you know this? Were you the one who gave it to him? If not than {hush shhh} kay! wink

relaxed? he won the thing before he got onstage! on the other side prince was not very welcome and boos and throwing his glove back at him.

i still think he did a darling nikki performance with the wrong beat. very punk!

...if only he did the splits...

why did MJ leave? if he suggested james borwn to call him up he should have stayed.

nod If it was the spirit of someone wasted on coke and alcohol that he channel then, he did a damn good job knocking down a pole on stage and all. This definitely was not a purple fan moment b/c MJ outshined him by leaps and bounds.

I don't know or care whether he was high, drunk, on some ego trip or whatever!

What I do know is that HE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T THERE TO PERFORM!!! Michael Jackson's punk ass knew that, too! That's why he had James Brown call him up there, to deliberately embarrass him!

Guess Prince ended up with the last laugh though!! razz

What the F--K are u talking about???? The spelling XTC, or the chosen verbiage I selected regarding fanship devotion? It doesn't matter - once again some ASSX has decided to focus on me instead of the topic at hand.

I AM actually focussing on the topic in hand.
You quoted lyrics from Play In The Sunshine as support for your claim that he used drugs.

If you read the whole quote you wrote you would realise that it is saying they want to have fun WITHOUT margarita or ecstacy (and no you can't spell ecstacy or ass).

I withdraw my offer of help with english as you cuss and send me an orgnote calling me an "assx". I have also blocked you.

Think before you write and grow up child !

Oh and btw VERBIAGE means unnecessary words.

Right! If Prince had declined, it would have been embarrassing! Michael Jackson knew that shit! That's why he did it! I give Prince mad props for getting up there in the first place like that! That took a lot of heart being caught off guard and all! He still held his own until he was getting off stage and he grabbed that prop that wasn't secured to the stage but you know, I'm fam so according to some I'm just making excuses. What the fuck ever!! Had the roles been reversed and Prince did that to Mike, I have to wonder how he would have handled it? hmmm

Taking everything into consideration that's being said, I gotta say that yeah I think P pulled off a very cool performance....Was it weird? Hell Yeah...Was it mysterious? Definitely....It was a cool performance that is a part of music history, the type of thing you gotta see to believe. When I first saw this video clip I thought I was on drugs cuz I couldn't believe what I was seeing or that this ever happened!
