I think that, for me, this album is lacking something - there are a few really good tracks (One u wanna c, future baby mama, Mr Goodnight, Chelsea Rogers) but there are a couple that make my finger itch and the only thing to get rid of itchyfingeritis is to use the effected digit to press the 'forward' button my cd/mp3 player... Planet Earth is the worst offender

This is just my humle opinion. Let the flaming commence!

I give this album 1.5 stars, or 2 stars at the most.

It's packed with cookie-cutter Prince songs....

The melodies are catchy yet the songs are forgettable; we've heard 'em all before.

For me, "Somewhere Here on Earth" is the standout track. Surprisingly, "Resolution" is a favorite....

But there's nothing on this album --not "Guitar", which strangely steals U2's "I Will Follow" riff which sounds totally WRONG for the track--that comes close to "Kiss" or "Alphabet Street" as standout classic Prince Songs.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Imago

3 1/2 stars

Weird thing is I like several of the songs individually moreso than any of the songs on Musicology or 3121 , but when thrown together on this awkward little album, they just don't seem to work as a cohesive whole. My appreciation for the album fluctuates between 2.5 and 3.5 stars depending on the day.

As a long time Prince fan, one just can't help but compare it to previous efforts. The 1 U wanna C pails in comparison to "Take Me with U" or "Raspberry Berret", whereas Chelsea Rodgers pails in comparison to "DMSR", "Baby I'm a Star", etc. etc.

I will say that he seemed to pay more attention to melody this time around than on the past 2 efforts, and he's no longer sounding like Prince immitating the radio hits (minus Mr. Goodnight of course), but if he wanted to advertise his abilities to the UK through a CD "giveaway", he could have picked a fiercer collection of songs. Hell, a compilation of his best songs from The Gold Experience to present day would have been more affective. lol

Compared to some of his recent work (3121, Musicology...) I'll give it a hearty 4 stars. What I like most is the flow of the album and the songs are great.

Standout tracks are The 1 U Wanna C, Chelsea Rodgers, Mr. Goodnight (his best "rap" yet), and Guitar.

Now, if I hear any more chuckleheads talk smack about how P "stole" the git-riff from U2 or the bass line from Daft Punk I'm gonna bust a vein. First go back and listen to U2 and DP, actually listen! Sure they sound similar, especially the DP bass line, but they sure as hell aren't copies. Especially the whole U2 thing, that's just BS!!! Get a q-tip and clean your ears...

If you wanna talk iSht like that then call out Fergie's sound-alike track on "Big Girls don't cry". Sounds a lot like "Like a Prayer" by Madonna to me. Or bring back that whole Vanillla Ice BS about "It's a totally different bass line" and Bowie.

Frikkin' hater-ass weenies need to lay off!

I'd give it 3 at the most. It's ok, but far from his best work.

3.5 stars out of 5

I was expecting Planet Earth to be a total disappointament after watching the Verizon wireless commericals which promoted the plain, pop-rock influenced "Guitar", but it has grown certainly well on me over these past few weeks. Sure, there's no "oh shit" moment here, but most of these songs here have quality and they show that Prince is really not playing it safe like he did with his two great comeback albums (Musicology and last year's magnificent 3121).

So, what I'm really saying is that PE is more of a "pop" record. There is just one funk workout here, that really has disco rhythms, but there are no hard grooves that we expect Prince to do. The uptempo tracks have an effortless, hooky flair, while the slow jams...well, if you're a Prince fan, I don't have to tell you about his slow jams, right? I'll have to say PE is just a quite fine album, not a great or remarkable one, because clearly there's nothing memorable here.

3121 is still getting more spins than this one has! biggrin

Hmmmmm wink A WIDE variety of comments...Sooooo here's mine 4 what it's worth. cool cool cool 1/2

I loved the music on all the tracks. The lead-ins were wonderful.BUT the lyrics in many of the songs were lacking a lot in my opinion..."VERY Prince" tho..

Since P is so controlling it stands 2 reason that would B reflected in his lyrics. (If I had a choice of 3 dresses I wouldn't tell him "Which One" I chose!! And see what suit he would pick 4 himself.. But that's just me.)

That something else that disappointed me about this album. I couldn't even understand what he was talking about in some of these songs because of its lryics and production.
