i think prince likes to play songs(controversy,cream,housequake,3121)
that don't have some intergral parts that are so characteristic

that playing those songs without those parts wouldn't make any sense.

you can put cream in any arangmant and it would work ,

but you can put last december or when doves cry in some radicaly diffrent arangman because those songs are so perfect and any change to them would lead to some dangerous teritory.

Anyway, I wouldn't call it lazy. It's probably the artist fearing redundancy and feeling "been there done that". Some people don't want to feel anything remotely close to "taking a step back", even if that's not what they're doing.

I really think he's mistreated When Doves Cry over his career. I mean, this song is just screaming for an elongated guitar solo like Purple Rain always gets, but idk what his deal is. Honestly, I think the renditions he did with the synths and horns on the Sign and Lovesexy tours are cheesy... I mean he cradles Purple Rain so much like a baby, but this just doesn't get the the respect it should for being his BIGGEST song ever.

Check the live performance of the song "Sign O'The Times" from the Sign O'The Times concert movie on DVD.

It really *DOES* work played live!! The guitar is awesome.
