It was the 1980s, and MTV was king of the star-making machines. Also big was Rick Dees' countdown (I know ... I'm old).

But, given the lack of diversity that marked MTV then (unless it was Yo ... MTV Raps!), the number of black males who saw regular rotation on the network was really down to Michael Jackson, Prince and the black dude in the "In a Big Country" video...

So, Prince's "look" became a template for many black (and black-looking) dudes seeking similar mainstream acceptance, as much a look of the 1980s as the Material Girl's tattered, multi-layered lingerie was for many teen girls...

To be a thin, androgynous, waifish black dude almost immediately brought comparisons to Prince and Michael Jackson, the former if the man also played guitar.

Shalamar's sound in that 1980s era also drew from the same well of rock-infused funk that made Prince popular. So, considering "the look" and the sound, I cannot imagine to whom else Micki would have been compared.

Haha, I saw Micki Free recently. Him and his band were the first act on at the Hyde Park Calling thing that Aerosmith headlined. Micki Free wasn't even on the printed bill so no-one realised exactly who he was.

Micki Free is a great guitarist. It's ashamed that he is so underrated. There are so many great black guitarists out there that a lot of people really don't know about. Really Sad!
