Prince in the eyes of those who R not fans.

Most of my friends think of 1999, Kiss, and When Doves Cry when they think of Prince.

Some think of Purple Rain and Diamonds and Pearls, and 99% of them have never heard anything off of SOTT.

Most think he's gay and don't feel comfortable riding in the car listening to his 80's shit.

Then when you pop in some 90's-Present shit and they realize how deep and different/experimental his music was, they throw a fit.

Even with the 80's stuff. When they hear the non-single material, they just can't believe it.

I had this dude tell me, he just thought of Prince "as an older version of Micheal Jackson." Hahaha!

Comparing MJ's catalog with P's is like comparing Platinum and 14 Qrt. gold. The latter works, but that platinum just shines brighter son.

Most people don't even know that P has like 40 LPs and MJ's can be counted on 10 fingers.

I was in both sides.

In the 80s I used to hate Prince. I only listened to hard rock and thought he used to do ´faggy poppy music´. I remember that I only liked ´When doves cry´ and ´Gett off´

Now that I am a fan, I sometimes dont understand how people cant acknowledge his genius, but it´s simply because they dont know his music.

I first got into Prince back in '91 ish...a friend lent me Diamond & Pearls and I hooked. I dug out anything and everything I could find that Prince recorded. Even back then people were saying how ahead of his time he was, and how the "general public" seem to be unaware of his genius. They predicted that in time people will come to realise what they didn't see back then, that the man is a musical marvel. I think that's slowly starting to happen finally and alot of people are catching up to what we've all known for some time...that Prince is, quite frankly, awesome!

There is a pawn shop around here that sells guitars and on each guitar there is a little hand-written note saying a little witty phrase like, "Buy Me! I can play myself!"

And on one used purple Ibanez guitar it says "If PRINCE can play, ANYONE can!"

I don't know why, but I got MAD when I saw that. The guy that works at the pawn shop is also a metal-head guitarist, which for some reason made me even more angry. He's probably just jealous.

I worked with a guy who always used to laugh at Prince and say he was gay. Funnily enough this guy was into George Michael to the extent of even having the beard and haircut.
This was all before Michael's arrest and coming out. My work buddy kept quiet after that and also shaved off his beard lol

This happens and has happened to many other artists as well. U should hear the things non fans of Michael say about him. Same with The Beatles. Jimi Hendrix. Even Elvis. No matter how talented u are or how popular u have become, you're always going to have many other people who think u suck. It's just the nature of the beast.

[Edited 8/14/07 7:53am]

Let me also comment on this post up above; I too have also heard all of these things said about P. You'll be surprised on just how many people truly believe that P is gay. I was surprised. Those who compare him to Michael, is somewhat like when folks compared The Stones to The Beatles. Totally different artists. But also I have found that many folks who knock P, I believe it comes from jealousy. Very few artists, ever, have had the talent and versatility that P has showcased. And then to be as sexual as P has been to boot. No one has seen anything like P. Some people envy real talent. When there is no denying it. When it's as clear as the moon in the sky, some resent talent. I believe that's sometimes the case with Prince. He's so obviously talented. Someone like that is going to receive backlash. The comparison to Micheal is a way to try to undercut Prince. These same people probably hates Michael. But their probably not jealous of Michael either. Micheal isn't threatning to people. Sure, u have some people who thinks P sucks and have always sucked. And their not jealous of him. They just don't dig him or his music. But those people aren't going to compare him to Michael. Those people, if they do think P is gay, could careless. That's how u respond when u don't like an artist. U don't care. But when u start putting down an artist, then ususally u do care. That artist has struck a nerve with u so to deal with it, u try to undermine the artist by saying things that u think will diminish or overshadow the things that u resent about that artist. That happens with Prince quite a bit.

I don't know anyone around here that likes prince. Most people don't know i like him and those who do think I'm weird and obsessed with a gay man who supposedly looks like MJ (i have yet to see how he looks anything like MJ). I get soooo mad when people insult him. A kid in my Spanish class was ragging on him and it was all i could do not to punch. I don't get why everybody can't see what a genius he is.

eek I think there are "A LOT" of "closet" and or "closet shelf" fans out there. In private they probably find him intriguing and find themselves inexplicably drawn to him physically and musically, but in public they are too cowardly or insecure with themselves to admit it! confused

It's according to the age group of the non-fan because Prince has been around so long.

There are older people that never liked Prince from day one because he was so nasty and they think he still is.

There are lots of old school R&B ex-Prince fans that think Prince lost his mind beginning with "Around The World In A Day" and became "too white".

There are lots of the new found pop/rock ex-Prince fans who discovered Prince beginning with "Little Red Corvette" and "Purple Rain", who dropped Prince, just like the R&B fans, beginning with "Around The World In A Day". Their reason is because they felt Prince became too nerdy and artsy/fartsy.

Now there is the younger generation who would never like Prince anyway because he makes real music and gets faster than midtempo.....something that the majority of their shit hop generation knows nothing about.

Then, there's the stupidest reason of all for someone not being a fan and this has been with Prince since day one....."Prince is gay".....Well duh? I think so too! But what the fuck does that have with music? These folks are not even worth arguing with though because a homophobic person is just as stupid, ignorant, and trashy as a racist trailer park trash.

It seems like 'mainstream America' didn't get past Purple Rain. I am always amazed by most people's lack of knowledge when it comes to Prince's music. Yesterday I was asked by a co-worker if Prince was still making music. eek
And whenever I tell someone that I am a Prince fan, they say: "Oh, then you must like Purple Rain" Like that is the only song that Prince is known for. And the astonished look on their faces when I tell them that I own over 30 Prince Albums and Purple Rain is not my favorite song. rolleyes
