Pop Life Interlude

I've always wondered what the "chaos" interlude near the end of Pop Life is all about? Is there a story there?

it's crowd riot noise off of a sound effects library that can also be heard in the movie "Alone in the Dark" 1982.

I heard it is actually the crowd booing Prince off stage when he first played as support opening act for The Rolling Stones!

perhaps Prince is making reference to this event by using this sound effect, but I think he was covering his ass in such a Republican, elitist song (pop life) by also including a section in which he has caused an uproar, an outrage.... "throw the bum out" by singing lines such as

"We all got a space 2 fill
Pop life
Everybody cant be on top"

From Wikipedia:
A well known legend regarding the song Pop Life is actually its most interesting. The crowd that can be heard during the part in the song that sounds like a boxing match is actually audio footage from the legendary Rolling Stones concert (1981) where Prince and his band were the opening act. This was an event that found Prince paying his dues years earlier than the days of Prince's superstardom. The group quickly found themselves under siege by an unappreciative "Rolling Stones" crowd who were definitely not expecting a show that Prince as the "warm up band" was providing. This is said to be pre "1999" which means (if it's true) there is a very likely chance that Prince was dressed in his Dirty Mind /Controversy standard garb which usually consisted of simply high heel boots, a trench coat and bikini underwear. During this bashing Prince had bottles thrown at him and he and the band were booed offstage. If you listen closely you can clearly hear some of the insults that were shouted at the performers.

I always wondered about that interlude, thanks.

I don't want to start a thread about it, but who says (what appears to be) "look at these bargains over here ladies" at the start of "If I Was Ur Girlfriend"? Anyone?

you realize that's wrong don't you? an urban prince myth about that sound effect off of a cd which has been heard in other things like the movie I mentioned above. I went ahead and corrected the wikipedia entry, thanks for pointing it out!
