I've been meaning to start a thread about "Princebonics" and why it sucks, especially these days.

"Princebonics" is when letters and/or words are replaced by numbers and single letters in Prince's communication, lyrics, letters, email, anything basically that is written or typed in the Prince universe.

Now, I digged the older simpler version, just when are was replaced by R, to replaced by 2, you replaced by U, for replaced by 4.

Now it seems like ANY possible letter or word that can be replaced with numbers and single letters is being done. Of course it comes from Prince himself, but I also suspect his employees are pushing it further and coming up with "Princely" ways of writing and it really SUCKS.

I get those NPGMC emails and it's just a pain to read and deciper at the same time. Not that it's hard, just EXTREMELY annoying. Even more at the website and trying to read Prince's essays.

I know, this seems like trivial whining about stupid things, but really, when UR trying 2 read anything serious from him or his camp, it really makes IT HARD TO smoothly read and grasp what the heck is being communicated to you.

It's like this, you're reading along and know there's some good points being made then the Princebonics kick in, your mind has to stop to DESIPHER the Princebonics, then you have to replace the "Princebonics" words with the ones you just mentally replaced them with and restart the last sentence you read. Sheesh, just annoying man.

It's like, trying to do two or more things at the same time and is completely disorienting and just makes the writer look idiotic.

Anyway, I say it sucks and it should go back to just being confined to creative stuff, lyrics, tourbook text, etc. with JUST 2, 4, R and U. That's it!

I just skim over their emails when i see words like "in4m" or "ur".
It's one thing to use it in a song- esp 15 yrs ago when it was cool. But now, it's just a pain in the ass.

I never bought it but I don't like being lied to, especially about something as important as language.

I got the idea after I had a conversation with my girlfriend about linguistics. How powerful it is and how really important it is the development of language AND preservation of other languages in school.

But as far as the Princebonics go, I really would prefer the simpler days of 2, U and 4. Non of this "per4mance" thing. That's just plain ridiculous.

Anyway, at least it's on record.

Yes. I agree! Language is at the root of who we are and the purpose of language is to communicate rather than to confound. If the NPGMC staff (or whoever) used the OED when dissecting words I would stand up and applaud. At least that would be based in reality. But this CONtract stuff - etc. - saddens me.



I'm always happy to give credit where credit is due! And we English majors are a happy bunch. We are pleased to see anyone (English major or non-English major) express him or herself with verve and style.

i only use what i call "1st wave" princebonix...i just use the 4, u, 2 and such. i ain't into that "eye" and all that crap. it's annoyin.
