irrational arguments about prince with children under the age of 12

my nieces, ages 11 and 10, called me in the room to tell me that future baby mama was on one of the cable music channels. the older one says prince is old and dresses like a girl, the younger one says prince stinks. realizing, of course, that these are young children and not adults, i said back to them that Ciara was really a man and that's why bow wow broke it off and then demonstrated how beyonce fell down the steps at her show, using a bratz doll to show how she fell. they shut up after that.
on a side note, my 8 year old nephew doesn't like prince either, but i gave him a dollar to say he liked prince..which he took lol

When I was little (aka less then ten years ago), I always thought Prince was a cartoony glittery man who wished he was a lady. I also thought he was friends with my mom, but only because my mom remarked once that they were the same age razz

When I was very young, I kinda sorta maybe thought P was white. This outraged my dad, who knows black music so well he could teach a course on it.

I'm a tutor, and sometimes my students will ask me what kind of music I listen to cause I'm still pretty young.

When I mention that Prince is my favorite artist they usually respond with one of the typical response ("...hes so girly", "...he's weird",etc.)

So I school them for real razz

....Then they usually just think I'm weird too lol
If you will, so will I

The biggest problem in the world today is adults "reasoning" with children.

The proper response to children dissing Prince is, "Go to your room right now...and just think about what you said. And don't come out until you can apologize!" mad
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

From the mouth of babes... Kids are honest when it comes to things like these. They haven't perfected their lying skills yet. Thats what society is for it teaches us how to ignore our initial impulses and lie to say what might not offend someone else. If a child sees a grown up and to the child the grown up looks weird, I let them express that. Because later on we will tell these same children "Don't talk to strangers or anyone that makes u feel uncomfortable." But if u don't allow that child to express his/her reservations about the way a certain grown up looks or dresses or acts how will they ever be comfortable trusting their own instincts? Prince's ways have never really bothered me even when I was a child but I could certainly see why the cover of Lovesexy would alienate some. I mean you show the average child a picture of Prince in his Lovesexy outfit where he is dressed like a little schoolboy, and u r bound to get some laughter and jokes. Its fine because later on in life they will discover how to dress it up in their mind by telling themselves " He's an artist and artists are allowed to be different."
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

My daughter is 8 now and says she likes Prince, but only his "music". She says that Prince is "nasty". Once when she was 7 I told her to put on the Purple Rain dvd and she said "I'm not touching that filth!" I just had to laugh it sounded so funny coming from an 7 year old! It's funny because my dad used to let me watch purple rain as a kid. He would record it on the VCR from cable but edit the "Lake Minetonka" part out. biggrin
