There seems to be a big divided opinion about Planet Earth

Seriously, so far the general consensus of people who heard P's latest joint have either loved it or hated it. I personally think it's some of the best songs Prince has done in years, so obviously I love it. But here in orgland and other places of purple people congregation, there's a big love/hate polarized opinion about Planet Earth.

I would like for most of us to love the album and take it for what it is. But since people have different expectations of what Prince should do, it's just not the case. shrug

Since 1985 there have been divided opinions of each and every new Prince album.

Thats what is cool about P, he ain't stuck on one road. There is something for everyone. And any fan is going to have something to blast from their car stereo or maybe, on the other hand, something to lock in their car trunk and drive into a river.

i love it when prince puts his heart and soul into a project
e.g. most of his '80s output, TRC, and various other goodies

Maybe it's because there aren't any dance/funk songs other than Chelsea Rodgers. Chelsea's the bomb but it does have an old school flavor to it, it's just that there should have also been something like Black Sweat on there. Maybe we'll get on a B-side. cool

It took him 19 years, but for me he has finally released an album that is as brilliant as it is diverse and that is as enduring as it is within reach to more than music snobs.

If "Mr. Goodnight" were only replaced by something as terrific as "Irresistible Bitch", this album would be completely unflinching to me on every last front.

And we are *all* guilty to one degree or another of speaking willfully on music that is not strongly represented in our music collections. wink

Not feeling the album yet!

Guitar is the stand out track and an instant favourite (wsh it had an extra 2 minutes guitar solo), then maybe Lion of Juda, The one u wanna c and Future baby mamma.

I'm finding it very similar in structure to Chocolate inavasion and Slaughterhouse as a good collection of tracks and not a deliberately conceived album (even though I suppose it is).

3121 is definately his strongest work this side of 2000 and because of it had raised my expectations higher than what I think Planet Earth actually delivers, of which don't get me wrong is still really great, just not amazing. It coulda done with being at least 12 tracks too!!

Definately better than Chocolate Invasion and Slaughterhouse, but as good as Rave, Rainbow Children and Musicology?? Personally no - however all my friends and colleagues that aren't fanatical about Prince but got the album free with the paper have nothing but praise and Love it!

I like some of the songs. It seems like Prince is trying to make every fan happy. I think 3121 is a better cd and the Chelsa Rogers song reminds me so much of that 1999 master. I like Mr. Goodnight, even though that line is a little corny. After I listened to it the first time, I was thinking, is that all? I can't wait until he makes a better one.

I love the album -- even more so than 3121 which I felt was a disappointment. The only thing on 3121 I really dug was Fury. The rest of the album was nice. But nothing that really grabbed me. Not so with Planet Earth. Three songs in particular are exceptional. The 1 U Wanna See is perfect! If this got out to VH-1 or the adult radio public, it would be a hit. It's just that catchy. You can't resist it. Guitar and Resolution are the other two great songs. I didn'treally care that much for Chelsea Rodgers. It does have a nostalgic vibe to it though.

3121 is way far better imho

from 3121 to get on the boat (i love this song!)

PE is like lovesexy after SOTT, i only listen to PE, guitar, chelsea and one of the 2 last ones . same with lovesexy that at the firt listens i was only in2 alphabet st, glam slam, anna stesia and dance on.

PE is an album that needs a few listens unlike 3121 that is an easy album.

i respectfully dont dig the album, yet i accepted with 3121 that the studio brilliance is a long past phase of his life. he's done enough and chelsea is a gem like there will be future gems. i dont like the album and i accept that it is more my problem than his, he's still the man LOL, i just put Chelsea on my ipod and moved on. the D' Angelo Yoda Monarch joint is my thang right now.

Tremolina

I think each song on the album has very catchy melodies. It sounds to me like he pulled most songs out of the vault. I was actually XPECTING more weak songs like so many on his last 2 albums, so I was pleasantly suprised that this one is pretty strong from start to finish. That said, it's a pretty slick album too, only the title and final song really have anything to do with "planet earth", some of the lyrics are cringe worthy again, like on The one U wanna C and mr. goodnight which are godawfull NARCISTIC, and it still seems like he is coasting a lot, not really fully using his creative potential. But still, a pretty good album, when you are expecting nothing.

I am the opposite with these 2 albums....it took me more listens to get 3121 and I liked PE right away.

But in the end 3121, imo also, is a better album...but of course I enjoy them both!

As I said on another thread, Planet Earth is a good cd, but far from his best work. I would give it a 6 1/2 out of 10.

See, I don't get how people pick 3121 over P.E. 3121 had some good songs, but I think it's much weaker than the new joint. Sorry, but "Get On The Boat" and "The Word" just don't do it for me. And "Fury" doesn't even rock like the rock songs on P.E. His version on SNL sounded way cooler. I'm sorry but that's how I feel. shrug

I think its highs, PE, SHOE, 1UWC, are better than anything he's done in ages.
But the lows, Goodnight, Resolution, are as bad as anything he's done ever.

Agree with the previous post.

Chelsea Rodgers, Resolution,
Lion of Judah and All the Midnights are all
fairly tame, to these ears.

I found the second half of the album
really quite disappointing
and I'm quite sad to say this
is the first Prince CD
where I've really been like...
.."oh..." neutral
at some of the music,
although the first four tracks
are great.

I'm loving Planet Earth, except for Chelsea Rodgers. That track just feels so out of place on the album and the whole thing works so much better for me going straight from All The Midnights to Lion Of Judah.
