I don't know or care whether he was high, drunk, on some ego trip or whatever!

What I do know is that HE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T THERE TO PERFORM!!! Michael Jackson's punk ass knew that, too! That's why he had James Brown call him up there, to deliberately embarrass him!

Guess Prince ended up with the last laugh though!! razz

nod That's exactly how I see the whole thing. It was a set-up. MJ tried to make a fool out of P. and he succeeded for a brief minute. What a low blow! We all know now it hasn't hurt Prince's career in the long run. You can't keep a good man down. MJ however, is only in the spotlight these days for molesting little boys. How embarassing and sick is that? Look who's laughing now!

Y'know I heard that Prince Phillip actually financed the concert and was pirvy to MJ's evil scheme almost 6 months in advance.

His guitar playing was actually quite good, alot better than I remember. The part where he gets on the mic is just awful tho, he stands there for ages like he doesn't know what the fuck he's doing then just lets out this demonic scream.

You're laughing. When was the last time you took a look at the clip? If I lie I die.

I'm laughing cuz that's some silly shit! hah! I look at that clip all of the time, and if you look at prince clips of his performances through out the years you will see that Prince runs his fingers under his nose all the time showing a sign that he is funky. At least that's my take on it! shrug

My theory: P didn't want to go to stage, he was surely irritated because MJ asked James to bring him with them, so he performed angry and tense...

I remember hearing about this a few days after the show. It was talked about on a few black radio stations and it was in the newspapers. I was always left with the impression that P fell while trying to lean against a pole that wasn't mounted down to the floor. To this day, I have NEVER seen this footage. Can someone post a link up here so I can see this thing.

was prince high? i dont think so...did he look like a major dork on stage? yes....did someone clown his arse by throwing his glove back at him? hell yeah!!

overall though, it wasn't that big of a screwup...the entire situation is completely overblown by those who want to tear down prince and by the crazy arse famatics who want to put blame on everyone but the grown man himself.

He wasn't high. It was just a very young Prince, hoping to look cool. But failing. A rare thing to see with him.

Prince as we all know is a control freak and in this instance he had NO control, in fact that night probably mad him into even more of a control freak!

Prince has publicly made a fool of numerous people including Elton John, BrownMark,Sting and a Photographer Lady, so I don't feel sorry for him at all.

Elton John Story - Elton said "Hi, I love your music" at a recording studio and Prince looked at him and just walked away! Funny as hell... but still rude!

Sting - Onstage at Wembley Arena Sting played bass on Miss You with Ronnie Wood and Prince kept cueing the band confusing the hell outta poor Sting who had to stop playing!

BrownMark - Cussed him out and drop kicked him live on stage on the Purple Rain Tour and generally gave the guy a hard time. Now the above two rock stars have also been egomaniacs themselves so karma dealt with them but BrownMark was just a young guy!

Photographer Lady - Prince does this photo shoot where he disappears into his dressing room, the female photographer goes in to see if he's OK after he's been gone a while. He completely ignores her and she ends up crying in front of him wondering "what the hell is going on?". What a jerk!

He has hurt and abused many people with his power tripping so I'm glad he got a taste of his own medicine.

Sadly he didn't learn from it and continued to abuse his position

It saddens me that someone with that much talent and love from people has to act so disgraceful.

I'm sure his mother never raised him that way

The most amazing thing about this topic are the numerous interpretations people have in seeing the same video snippet. One person here said that Prince refused to shake MJ's hand when in actuality, the situation never occurred. Another person said he (Prince) was doing his best Darling Nikki impression but this was before Purple Rain (1984) we're looking at 1982 Maybe early 1983 (look at how Prince's upper body is, compared to maybe the When Doves Cry video. Look at Michael Jackson's nose and his clothes - that Sgt. Pepper jacket, he wore that during the 1982/1983 era). The fact that some people have attacked individual versus addressing the point at hand.

What's so odd is that so many people refuse to even enter the thought that Prince could be drunk or high. Like that is something so improbable. Like Mr. Rogers (host of the children's show that so many people though was gay but he was married and had children) cussing. Prince is human, mortal, Terran. He has the same temptations as all of us, as illustrated by his lyrics. Watch the video again without know that's Prince. I mean truly view it objectively and then decide.

i said he was in the darlin nikki mood and that scream and attitude it pretty similar. i also said it was in 83 before PR. so wheres the problem? i mean he was playing purpla rain before it was released and probably the night before or after was his preformance where he played it first with also "lets go crazy" and ended up with "DMSR"

if prince is human, mortal, Terran (sic) why is it that improbable to be drunk or high?

I was not critizing you and your view - my response was a generalization of the overall status of this topic. To be realistic he also has this same look during computer blue and sceams a bit there too. Most of the songs for Purple Rain had been performed live before the actual release. I would die 4 u, Baby, Im a star, Darling Nikki and Purple Rain and Computer blue. From what I recall but the reality of this is I was making a general statement and not directing or questioning your posting. you also state (as a paraphrase of my post) why is it improbable to be drunk - well that was my intial statement.

Wouldn't it be cool to hear from a musician who was in James Brown's band during that performance? Or maybe someone that was in the audience? Of course, you'd have to believe they were telling the truth that they were actually there.

My husband has worked with the James Brown Band for many years and he is still close friends with some of the musicians who were actually there that night. Being a Prince fan myself, of course I asked the guys about what happened. The truth of the story is that Prince did in fact get high that night - with some of James Brown's band members. I could even give you the names of the musicians, but since we are talking cocaine here, I will respect their privacy, appreciating that they have shared their story with me. I should add that various musicians who were there have confirmed the story, even though some of them haven't even seen each other in many years.
I was told that it was no big deal as everyone did coke back then. I was also told that Michael Jackson saw Prince getting high backstage, and many of the musicians believe that he asked James Brown to invite Prince on stage because he knew that Prince would embarrass himself. That part of the story is pure specualtion of course. But it's at least speculation by people who've been there. The only absolute truth is that Prince was in fact high that night, which might explain his rather sad performance.
