Whoa. Very few songs have ever made me feel genuinely sad, had a notable effect on my emotions, purely through the sound of the instruments. Like sure, stuff like Purple Rain or the Beautiful Ones have moved me and are right powerful. But man. This song is just haunting. Especially when listened to through headphones. The sound of it, it's hard to explain, but Prince really nailed the effect simple sound can have on emotions, depending on the tone and consistency it is played in. Especially that ambient background line throughout. Ough. This song has just got to me like not many others have. Haunting. It's amazing what an effect sounds can have on us, and Prince obviously realizes this.

Even without the lyrics (which I can seriously identify with: My first true love interest was a lesbian who found herself a girlfriend during our relationship). In fact I'd say it would be even more profound if it were purely instrumental.

Not that this needs to be said, and not that this is remotely new to me, but this man is a genius.
