Surely intolerance of intolerance is justified? Should we be tolerant of nazism? Please name me a religion that doesn't in some way stigmatise and foster negative attitudes towards homosexuality for example...

firstly...Smokey D. Fontain? nice name! confused
and secondly...I gotta say that upon first reading this I thought this was a GREAT interview...yeah Prince came off a bit arrogant (woot!) but that's the prince we all know and love is it not?
From the very brief answers to the first few questions, to the first long answer being about using the bible to "help you with your sins" and getting advice from solomon cause he had a thousand wives says to me that (perhaps) he has accepted that he has a weakness for women and seeks the bible out for forgiveness and advice. lol woo hoo! makes sense right?

and this part
Prince: Over time I've started to understand that it's really the love of music. When you have a real love for music, you kind of let go. When you let go, I don't care if you're a writer or a dancer or a musician or a lighting guy doing the spots above the stage.

Sometimes I look at our lighting guy sitting up there, and he'll be watching me during a show, looking at me like, "I got it". It's little things like that. I mean, we could be dead; we could be non-existent, but we're not. We're all alive. It's the acceptance of the gift of life.

I think it's great.

and I love this too..
They say I'm arrogant, but what I'm just trying to do is lead people to the truth. The truth is that we don't even know what the world will be like until we shake things up a little bit.

read that...and read it again...

I could cut and paste that whole thing...I think it's filled with all kinds of little gems.
When was this interview?
"not a fan" falloff yeah...ok

It's sad to see Prince so wrapped up in God and faith, since there is no God whatsoever, and all those books he's reading are just stories, meant to keep people in line and make a person feel something instead of nothing. Life is random, there is no God watching over us. But after losing his parents, his child, etc, I can see why someone would turn to religion. It's all fake though.

dont be silly, hes right, religion is a human invention designed to allow people to feel there is a point to their lives.

Prince is a man full of contradictions. The "women" that he says are a problem along with sex and drugs! I mean he based his career on sex and the love of women!!

The only thing he seems to get out of the scriptures are that someone like him wrote it long long ago! rather than whats in it. its the first thing he said.

You can't plant a theory on something you admit you don't understand. Thats ridiculous. Why not just accept our limitations and say "Who knows what factors were at play before the big bang, maybe scientific theory will one day provide greater understanding. Maybe not." No need to plant fanciful ideas like gods just because not knowing leaves you feeling powerless.

I bite my tongue to responses like this and the one from fonkee now days. I said what I had to say and I'm sure intelligent people understood my point.

The point is, he is doing what he needs to do.

He is centred in his true self.

Reading this, I connected with my true self. I get that from anyone who is speaking in a stream of consciousness way from their true self = GOD.

He is not a Guru. He is like everyone else. He just has a way of reaching many people and is using that platform wisely I feel.

The thread author's silence speaks volumes, Anxiety, as well as your attempts to avoid a serious discussion on the origins of the interview. It doesn't matter. The interview was old news by the time he cut and pasted it here anyhow. Keep up the good work.

who said i wasn't being serious? you know, you're probably right. it was likely a swipe. i have no proof of it other than circumstantial probability, and i have enough life experience to know that i can't take that as a form of proof. so. yeah. i believe giant magazine was the publisher of this article. and thanks for your compliment. smile

This whole notion of "I believe this, it is an article of faith for me, therefore you should respect it" just reeks of anti-intellectualism and I cannot get behind that at all.[Edited 8/12/07 15:09pm]

I'm not sure if that's a fair connection, but
I do agree with the viewpoint that if someone
simply believes something, it does not mean
that there is proof or credibility for its existence.

I consider myself something of an "intellectual" and yet
I have faith that there is more.

I frequently doubt my own faith, but
more often than not I feel that what people
call "real" is simply a way of reducing
actual feelings to non-feeling and that
there is a deeper, constantly present
truth which is obscured by worldly
artifice, ie, what we add to
reality.

I think, like a lot of atheistic viewpoints,
your opinion and others on this thread are
somewhat generalising
and reducing individual feelings to a kind of
robes and sandals idea of what faith
or religion is about...
...and definitely there are some people
who put those ideas of religion before
a true connection with God, an
experience which I would say is
more profound. But
from the sound of his music and
though he clearly finds value in
scriptural teachings, I do think Prince's
belief goes deeper than all this and to
pick it apart from a small interview
is doing that belief some disservice.
It is my opinion that the surface details that many think
of as spirituality or religion often
seem to get confused and grouped together
with what is actually and can only be a very personal thing
which can't really be reduced to
description in worldly terms, because the worldly
viewpoint relies on proof and there is no proof of
interior feelings and experiences, only evidence and acknowledgment
that they exist.

Anyway, I think my point is that this is
what tends to happen with discussions on religion
or spirituality... many people consider what
is real as a reduction or deconstruction
of what is always, for the converted,
simply there.

Personally I think all religions
are in some way a reflection of that deeper
truth which people call God.

Interesting interview but I wish there would be deeper pointed questions about Prince's philosophy. Seems alot of his beliefs stem from the late 90's JW conversion, but some it may be a quasi-new age mix of his own ideas. Maybe not.

These interviewers are something else. Quit kissin ass and ask obvious questions. Okay, Prince say's I don't believe in time, uhhhh..I believe that warrants a follow-up??? He doesn't believe in time, it's like the Rave 2000 video, he mentions intro to Purple Rain that time is a trick, we don't know the exact date and we've all only had one birthday. To continue to count birthdays you're body detoriates. Also mentioning the concept of the everlasting now, so it would be interesting to hear him explain, how it ties in with scripture, etc. Like most eccentric people, his intelligence, thought process, beliefs deserve further anaylsis. People say "he's out there", he's also very complex and highly intelligent.

Smokey D. Fontaine: Do you teach a lot of younger musicians in your bands?

Prince: No. I just do what I do, and they're going to get what they are going to get. If they get dog, they get dog.

Well, i guess, the atheists aint makin great songs, are they? Since one must read all that bull shit...
You have no idea of anything about what you call stories, or i guess u just refer to the moses episodes, when you are writing "meant to keep people in line". I guarantee you that atheists are far more well kept in line than religious people. btw... losing a child or parents (that is really grotesque that u mention that one as a key to faith, but it might just describe yourself better to the reader) may also, as well leads to doubt, not faith.
ps. Dawson would take Bach on a desert island, why not a fruit of atheism...?
Maybe because atheism isnt a key to creation? So be glad prince, and many other fellows are religious guys, otherwise you wouldnt have a lot to listen to... Unless of course Pomo is, also, your cup of tea...

And people, come on, p. isnt an intelectual, so give him a break. We're about shakn that ass, not reading dusty books right now, aren't we?
And when he refers to women, he talks about what can divert him from work, like doing d's & sexual intercourses. Nothing more...

The closest thing I've ever heard to a glimpse at Prince's beliefs/mindset is "One Song". Anybody here this? An NPGMC download from 1999/2000?

It's Prince talking the first 5 min ("1999 and the illusion continues...") then sings a little. He talks about (among other things) the two trees in the garden of Eden, choice, and the illusion of the world around us, kinda like The Matrix, the result of man's creations which lead society into isolation and despair.

I believe it ties in with the Matrix-like background on his current album cover Planet Earth, the 3121s streaming down. Relating to what...the behind the scenes doings of God or the illusion of society?? that is if 3121 is translated as God. The guy's deep. There were writings/dissertations on the NPGMC website around 2000, writer not-stated (Prince).

I remember being quite shocked at the level of depth and writing skill...almost scholarly on the subjects from drum machines vs. real drums to corporations enslaving artists. An avid reader, I can testify it was someone highly intelligent with strong analysis, clearly independant and against the established grain. When are we going to get the deep questions asked? I think the key would be no interview, no agenda, just talk to the guy normal for some archive!
