Who Played What on 'Planet Earth'. So I've been mentioning the generalized credits on the album in a few threads. There R credits there 4 people who aren't even on the album. My theory is that since we know 30 or so songs were recorded, and only 10 made the cut, that he decided 2 credit everyone involved in all 30 songs. The lack of a tracklisting supports this theory... The cover was sent 2 print before the final tracklisting was decided upon. Prince has a very distinctive feel on Piano, Bass, Drums, and obviously, Guitar, so listen hard children.
Soooo... Who do U think played what on each song? Here's my take, based on my very qualified ears and some inside info: "Planet Earth" (very sure about this one) Drums - Michael Bland Bass - Sonny T Piano, Guitar, and all other instruments - Prince "Guitar" - (very sure about this one) Drums - Michael Bland Bass - Sonny T Guitar, and all other instruments - Prince "Somewhere Here on Earth" - (very sure about Piano, Keys, Trumpet) Drums - Prince Bass - Prince Piano, Keys - Prince Trumpet - Christian Scott "The 1 U Wanna C" (quite sure about this one) Drums - Prince Bass - Prince (most definitely) Electric Guitar - Prince Keys - Prince Acoustic Guitar - Wendy Additional Keys - Lisa "Future Baby Mama" - (this is a no-brainer) All instruments - Prince "Mr Goodnight" - (not 2 sure, but it sounds like all Prince) "All the Midnights in the World" - (pretty sure) All instruments - Prince (piano definitely) "Chelsea Rodgers" - (pretty sure) Drums - Prince (definitely) Bass - Prince (possibly Josh) Keys - 2 low in the mix 2 tell. Percussion - Prince or Sheila (sounds more like Prince) Horns - we know this "Lion of Judah" - (somewhat sure) All instruments - Prince "Resolution" - (quite sure about this) Drums - Prince Bass - Prince Electric Guitar - Prince Acoustic Guitar - Wendy Keys - Lisa Anyone else? Peace. ~G "He's a musician's musician..."

I have been wondering this too. I do not believe Michael plays on Guitar. the part does not totally fit Michael. It is too straight forward without any interesting "tricks" thrown in.

I am not so sure about "The One U Wanna C". At the 7-7-7 show in MPLS Prince played this song whilst Wendy was onstage. He stopped and made a comment about her not knowing that song. If she HAD played on it wouldn't she know the song? "New Power slide...."

Yes, but that could have been Prince's humour. This one I can't confirm, but it has a prominent acoustic guitar part mixed in, and she is only credited with acoustic guitar and mandolin. "He's a musician's musician..."

I just don't hear any acoustic guitar on "Lion of Judah". If you're wondering about the heavily chorused, clean guitar part... that's clearly electric guitar. "He's a musician's musician..."

I think the rhythm section on the entire album is Josh and Cora Dunham except for "Guitar" (Michael B & Sonny T).
And I don't think it's Prince playing piano and keys on "Somewhere here on earth" but Renato Neto.

Is this 5 songs that were recorded during the project's timespan, which were around 30 songs, or 5 songs from the album? [Edited 8/10/07 13:49pm] "He's a musician's musician..."

Where was it confirmed that Sonny Thompson and Michael Bland play on the first two tracks? Anyone know when they were recorded? No hard feelings.

As I said, I don't have a source from the W&L side, so I'm not sure... I was thinking just acoustic guitar.
But if she played some electric, then certainly I would add the clean, but heavily chorused rhythm guitar in "Lions of Judah". U could then POSSIBLY add "All the Midnights in the World", but that's it, making four. "He's a musician's musician..."

I am just wondering why he decided not to have proper credits or track titles on the CD.
Given the industry is all about who gets the right "credit" can he get away with this?

The only thing I think might be different is the backing vocals on Mr Goodnight. It sounds like Marva King and possibly the name in the credits I didn't recognise - Shia something?! Haven't got a copy in front of me.
I think FBM also has some female backing vocals, again possibly Marva King. Also interested in the 30 songs recorded statement, which thread discusses this? And do we know the selection criteria/theory? A lot of people have said how schizophrenic the album sounds, I wonder if a loss of nerve led to the New Power Soul era NPG/Revolution feel to the album?
