You can't have it both ways. If it's commercial pop, then it's probably not going to have much of an edge. Radio tends to shy away from that kind of stuff. If it's edgy, it's not going to be commercial.

In music you usually get "pop", or you get something that kicks you in the teeth. Rarely do you get both. When you do, you get the album Purple Rain.

Oh, I thought you were saying as a whole....because, then you'd be a bit exaggerative.

It's Prince we are talking about here. It's not as if a pop record is gonna bring in more fans cause most people view him as this weird 80s popstar. He needs to just make music for his fans cause we are the ones buying the album. We've known him for his edge, that was the appeal not some bland pop song aimed for MTV or some cheesy RNB ballad.

Prince will never lose his edge .. an its great he is writing pop songs again .. i really dont think any of us would have wanted him to continue down the RAINCOW CHILDREN/N.E.W.S/ONE NITE ALONE road for too long .. that aint what got us on board an made us fans .Thats just something he got us to listen to cos he had courted us an won us over with his edgy pop .. an he needs to do that again to get more fans .an he is back in the game ..doing it again.. an he is damn good at it .if he carried on RAINBOW CHILDREN style . u would complaining types would be longing 4 him to do some comercial music again .. u can't please some folks . I think its great he has found his ability to make catchy prince pop again .. an i think alot of people were thinking he had lost it ....so just get on the boat an enjoy the ride .. pop is what a big bulk of his fans want ..an i am sure he will fall off track an do something less comercial again in the future .. but at the moment he is playing the game .which he plays so well .. I want THE ONE U WANNA C to be a big hit an it will win him loads of new fans .. he knows the game . he likes doing crazy edgy uncomercial stuff .. but no-one new will drink it . if he dont at first win em over with catchy pop ...think of it like persuaning a timid, posh, fridged, untrusting, unsure, good girl who don't have sex till after marriage .... u know u gotta impress em an make em feel like it aint scary .. make it appealing .. thats what playing the game of pop music is like kinda .. an N.E.W.S ..RAINBOW CHILDREN .. is married stuff .which no-one would be willing to do unless they werent already won over by him
An we all know he been playing the game again ..since MUSICOLEDGY ... an needs to keep playing it . if he wants to get new fans .. then when he has got em .he can take em down to listen to stuff they would never have done b4 .. which i suppose in away AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY was ... RAINBOW CHILDREN is way down the line in the relationship ...
whenever i want to hear some new music ...i make some - prince '99'

Yeah I AGREE with Giovanni.

Planet Earth is a great album FULL of EDGE! Listen to what's on the radio today...right now. As "odd" as "all The Midnights In The World", "Lion Of Judah", "Chelsea Rodgers", "The 1 U Want 2 See" and even "Planet Earth" might be to the average radio listener, they far exceed the Krunk, hip hop and Pop that's out now not only in sound but production, composition and musicianship.

Prince has ALWAYS been that way. It "seems" that there a some people that only think his edge was Purple Rain, LoveSexy or Sign O The Times...but has he really lost his edge??? I think not. He's giving us some great music in the 90's and 00's and seems to only get better.

Prince is the MAN! cool

It's easy for Prince to bring his butt out and sing "fuck" over a funky electro beat...

that's not edgy for him at this point.

Now, something he could do that's edgy is find some new signature sounds, some new fx, some new arrangement combos and make a whole album of a new unified sound.

Although, this new album, aside from Future Baby Mamma (which sounds like 80's style prince), does a have a retro warm noisy rock band sound that he has never put out before.

I just wish the lyrics to the more philosophical songs were more clever.

not true, before 3121 came out, there was anticipation all around. Sure it may be recent/poppy, but circa 05/06 a handful of my friends broke out Purple Rain and had all things Prince going on. it was awesome. a little promotion goes a long way.
