I love this CD (The Vault). Some great, jazzy and smoky material. When the Lights Go Down is on my Prince top 20 song list. Just don't think of the album as a "Prince" proper release and enjoy the many charms.

An under-rated classic.
Never got this album when it first came out and when I decided I wanted to give it a try I couldn't find it anywhere. About 3 months ago I downloaded it and I love it! One of his best releases when your in the mood for something mellow. My Little Pill is a pointless piece of crap (all 1:09 of it) but the rest of the album is all good. My favorites are There Is Lonely, It's About The Walk, 5 Women, Old Friends, but favorite of all is When The Lights Go Down - most definately one of the all-time smoothest, sweetest tracks i've ever heard: a true laid-back classic that completely enslaves your sensors. By the 2:33 mark, when his vocals glide effortlessly in, you'll be owned... If I was forced at gunpoint to name my favorite top 10 prince songs ever, this would definately be in there. Anyone know who's playing what on this track? Anyway, if i ever see this album in the shop I'll snap it up - until then, thank god for the internet... . [Edited 8/6/07 20:40pm]

I LOVE some songs on that album. She Spoke to Me, 5 women and Its About that Walk all rock my boat. I also can't forget the heartbreaking "There is Lonely" "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

I absolutely love "When The Lights Go Down". One of my all-time favorite Prince songs. I think that I actually like the lyrics from this version of "Old Friends 4 Sale" better than the original.

the original one is much more personal
and the instrumentation is so much better [Edited 8/6/07 22:08pm]

He talks about his friends getting "stuck in the snow", his brother being with his sweet baby, men turning their backs on love, and the story about the photographs. The lyrics seem as personal here as they do on the original. But I do prefer the music on the original.

The original Song 'old friends 4 sale ' is in the top 3 songs prince has ever written. The vocal is number one.

Love the album. 5 women = one of the best tracks EVER! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

It has few good songs. You should get it. Old Friends 4 Sale is the best. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

It's a very consistent album and contains some of his best jams, When the Lights Go Down and She Spoke to Me. My Little Pill is one of the strangest and most experimental things he's done, I love it! If you are into Jazz or Blues music then you will probably like it. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

It's About That Walk also is a great song that doesn't get enough love on the org. Fun/Naughty lyrics with cool horns and bass/drum section.

Has anyone heard Joe Cocker's version of "Five Women"? Any good? The critics were lazy on this cd (along with Chaos, Come) and just assumed that because they were contract fillers that the material wasn't good. P can make 50 great albums from the vault.

It's a great little album. Nothing that will blow you away, or have you contemplating the meaning of life, just a solid collection of songs with a live-in-the-studio sound. It's very digestible. I probably listen to it more than albums that I consider to be 'better' albums for that very reason. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

Yeah, it's OK. Although it was recorded from scratch by Cocker and his band it's pretty much the same, stylistically. You're not really missing anything (unless you're a Cocker fan). Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

The critics were lazy on this cd (along with Chaos, Come) and just assumed that because they were contract fillers that the material wasn't good. P can make 50 great albums from the vault. There´s something to both versions. Cocker´s version is "plainer" somehow. I do prefer Prince´s version though because I just love the horns and strings that are missing in Cockers version. That´s just bass and a guitar if I am not mistaken. Just half the instruments that Prince has. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."
