Imagine your taking a bubble bath with Prince...

...and as you slowly lower your naked bodies into the warm, fragrant water, you look up and notice...

... a small patch of rising damp in the corner of the bathroom. How should Prince treat this?

As Prince probably knows, any masonry structure unprotected by a properly installed damp proof course is prey to rising damp. Moisture will rise by capillary action (a suction phenomenon arising at the boundary between moisture and a small tube, crack or other tiny, enclosed passageway) through the pores of the masonry, seeking a means of evaporation. The moisture will continue to rise until it reaches a height, where unless no evaporation is possible, gravity takes over and pulls it down again. This height is seldom more than 1.20m.

The good news for His Royal Badness, however, is that in the 18th century it was discovered that an applied voltage affected capillary action. In the 19th century, it was further discovered that, when an electric potential was applied, moisture moved toward the negative cathode. If a very small electrical charge is "injected" into the building structure by means of titanium coated wire anodes, the effect is to repel the rising moisture molecules down the walls and harmlessly back into the ground. As long as this tiny positive charge is maintained, the protected walls remain dry and totally free of damp.

which protective damp strategy would you recommend to the pervy prince of pop? hmmm

you're weird, me likes that!. Yes prince in his cocooned Purple world has failed to grasp the concept of rising damp. Electro Osmosis should do the trick as hacking off a Metre of plaster and digging out a 6inch moat is too messy and the dust will get into his wardrobe. Electro osmosis will probably inspire him to write a rival to Lets Go Crazy in the process.

Funkyhead's right, it may seem funny, but structural damage due to rising damp is no laughing matter.

However, Prince will have the last laugh if he regularly checks his building for water leaks from guttering, also check for defects in pointing, the roof and other structures (e.g. lead flashing) which could allow water ingress.

can u relate?
yes

well, damn, you're right. I better keep that all in check so it never ruins a bath with Prince. I'd hate to somehow get that opportunity and then have a rising damp ruin it. lol razz

I can totally see this as a banner ad here on the forum. Actually, this might be one of the smartest topics here in a while...because I see some crazy stuff here.

He'd probably just pass it off as being due to the result of something like doves crying & just ignore it.

And since he's out of the tub anyway, I'll ask him to fetch my pumice stone and to get to work on my heels.

One of those rare times when the architecture-world's definition of "erection" coincides with everyone else's.
