I remember my eyes welling up with tears somewhere on that second disc because I realized we/I had never really heard that depth of love in Prince's music. His heart was incredibly naked. I feel sorry for those folks that just saw it as saccerine and corny. It says so much about their own heart.
There was just something so open and incrediby beautiful about those songs that really touched my soul. Like he just threw all caution to the wind and put it all on the line for love...there ain't nothing saccharine about taking a risk like that. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I so so agree! I think also with the passing of his child and first marriage you can definitely hear a very tender and genuine side that really doesn't appear elsewhere, that we may never hear again! I agree that this album is better than many have said and it's actually starting to date better. It's the last Prince album I can think of where there seems to be real, I don't know... joy and honesty?... and fun.

A very perceptive observation. I also like this album. It is a little bloated, a 2 disc album would've been stunning! I'm going to make an amazing compilation from these songs this very day! small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

I disagree. I suppose if you dislike the song you are bound to see it otherwise, but this song deserves every good thing that is said about it. Interesting. What about that song do you like so much? See, it's not all bad, despite my over-fondness for one too many disparaging adjectives.
I love adjectives--disparaging or not, you use them well. Hey skywalker. That's kinda how I feel when people say prince can't do rap. I always feel he is bringing something different to the table in his approach. Its rap filtered though the prism of Prince. I don't expect it compete with Jay-Z or any other rapper really. I'm not looking for it to end up on a rap anthology lol.

With all respect tricky, saying people who don't like a CD comprising entirely of corny romantic cliches don't know what love is, is pretty silly. But I'm glad you liked it so tricky99 said: I feel sorry for those folks that just saw it as saccerine and corny. It says so much about their own heart.
What it says is that some people related to that kind of slushy flowers and chocolates type romance, and some prefer romance to be a little more... personal.

Joint 2 Joint is an awesome record. Quirky lyrics, great guitar work... certainly one of his more imaginative and experimental tracks from this time.
I also love the Poet 99 samples. She's a really talented rapper and the use of samples on Joint 2 Joint and particularly Face Down are really effective. Face Down is probably his best 90s track. Those strings are so elegant and haunting and I love his arrogant vocal delivery. Great bass work and absolutely mind-blowing live! New World is a great track, as is The Love We Make, In This Bed I Scream, I Can't Make U Love Me, Soul Sanctuary... Sure, no-one can deny there's a hell of a lot of filler on that record, but I think some fans struggle to see past that. As a triple disc set, it probably does bog the rest of the record down which is unfortunate. I know it's a cliche, but there IS a great record in there somewhere. If you disagree, you probably just haven't spent the time trying to find it.

I can. As nobody agrees on the "filler" tracks how we can be sure it exists? Glug, glug like a mug

As you requested I will say opinions are opinions. "Emancipation" is one of his blandest efforts IMO but still ranks as "good"

After reading through this thread, I sat down last night and came up with a single disc's worth of songs from Emancipation that I could listen to without having to skip over songs. I listened to it this morning, and I really, really like what I came up with, from song selection to the order of songs. Here's what I have, in order:
New World The Human Body In This Bed I Scream Somebody's Somebody Joint 2 Joint One Of Us Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother, Wife The Love We Make Face Down Curious Child Dreamin' About U The Holy River Sleep Around

I'd replace One Of Us with Soul Sanctuary though.

To re-address the balance of sneering criticism - what do I like about Emancipation? Well, the rare vulnerability of Big White Mansion would be stunning live and acoustic, Dreamin' About U is lustfully hypnotic, We Gets Up is an extended portion short of being a great Lovesexy B-Side. On an album bloated with pastel-coloured, greeting card sentiment-flavoured soda saccharin, One Kiss At A Time manages to keep it's head above water. Sleep Around was the great dance single that never was (although as with almost all the album, the Michael Jackson, mannequin-like production keeps it from being truly great) and New World is the best track on the album. See, it's not all bad, despite my over-fondness for one too many disparaging adjectives. [Edited 8/10/07 2:24am] See this is the problem with every discussion of Emancipation - we all agree it's a mixed bag, but disagree as to what the good and bad trax are (or what's "filler") as someone else pointed out. The songs you praise are all the ones I most violently DISlike in the album, excepting New World, which I think is one of the best! Compare this to, say SOTT, which most agree has its stronger and weaker trax, but with a few exceptions (FIML for example), most can more or less agree what these are, and the people who DISlike trax are in a minority. Would have made a great double album. Sonically it suffers from that small plastic sound he got into in the late 90s. The covers were a nice idea in theory. In practise they seemed a bit pointless, apart from BBGW. However, there are at least 8 songs on here that I love, particularly Big White Mansion, and probably another 8 or 9 I like, although even the best tracks don't come near the heights of TGE.
I don't know what happened after this album. I think the death of his son had to affect him on a subconcious level that even he may not have been aware of. It seems like he retreated into mindless music with NPS and Rave, then religious dogma with TRC. Maybe that would have happened anyway. I guess we'll never know. "Until ur in my arms again" mindless?? That track is DEEP!! Have heard that it was about his son, a definate attempt to reconcile all the biting grief he was stricken with, sub-concious, concious or otherwise.....personally, i find it v. moving...

Emancipation would have made a fantatsic single album, personally I think over recent years he has gone back to the sound of Emancipation, I want him to move back over to the Rainbow Children camp, love the "real tape" sound and instruments on that record "Still Crazy 4 Coco Rock"
