Rick James was one of the most influential performers/music writers of our generation. Most people dont even know that RJ was supposed to be one of the replacement Temptations when he was discovered and started his solo career. He could flat out "sang", a true musical voice. But, with that said, there is a DVD out called RJ: Super Freak tour. RJ was NOT a great live performer!!! Even trying to compare him to Prince, in a live sense, is NO match. Compared to others, he was engaging and dripping with funk and sexuality. IMO, its a 3rd round knockout by Prince in this match-up.
R.I.P. RJ....funk hasnt been the same without ya!!! "If you wanna feel the FUNK....then you have to know the SOUL!!!"-----(Up and Down...just like a seesaw, Back and Forth...oh girl I'm fallin)

Answer: A LOT! No one is denying that. It's just that there are some folks here that seem to think that funk begins and end with Prince.

rebelsoldier said: Rick James should be in the Rock and Roll hall of fame yesterday. Amazing performer and musician. MTV refused to play Rick, he was just too black and too strong for them. He never compromised the funk.
And yeah Prince did take a lot from Rick, he was doing all of Rick's moves when he was on tour with Rick giving the impression that they were his because Rick came on after him. That nobody can deny. I can understand not liking Rick but at least fucking respect the guy's talent cause he has bucketloads of it. Well Stated.

somedaysoon said: i watched it for the first time and i remembered the stories and how he and prince battled it out on stage. at first I was like ricks background singers suck,,lol but then I watched Rick move and dance and even the call and response thing prince does. The horn section rocked (something prince has been reaching for in alot of his recent work) and then right after rick performed luv gun... his guitarist rocks out a solo. And actually I had turned away from the screen and then i swear to you i heard lets go crazy's guitar finale solo.
That doesn't mean Prince stole it. I was shocked and slightly disappointed.
Why were you dissapointed? Artists are influenced by other artists, that's the way it is and always will be. Only the stupid are STILL Prince fans.

[Edited 8/8/07 18:15pm] The most tasteless response I have ever read .... You know, it's responses like that that give those of us who fervently defend Prince a bad name. It's really no wonder that we are so disliked by others like Okayplayer, etc. I wish wlcm2thdwn would realize that responses like that don't help the cause at ALL and only make things worse for EVERYONE who defends Prince. Only the stupid are STILL Prince fans.

Rick talks about picking Prince up, (little guy) and replies to the interviewer who says he should be more socially responsible..."You too straight for it?? Don't watch it! Turn the TV off!"
