Beautiful Experience Appreciation thread

stumbled across this recently again....what was prince planning for those Gold/Come songs? what was the purpose of this video?

The video for Race is awesome. The performances of "Now" and "Interactive" are amazing. Mayte was quite the hottie...Her moves are hypnotic...the perfect counter part to Prince. And even a song I don't like "Days of Wild" was great live.

Was Gold/Come supposed to be one big project or did he intend on releasing them separately (maybe he was trying to replicate the way Lovesexy/Black Album were linked)

I think Prince was far ahead of his time with this release. The film is a bit futuristic, it seems to be about people coocooning in the safety of their homes, too scared or shy to go outside and enjoy themselves and looking for some comfort and communication in the wilderness of the internet, and keep in mind, this film is way back from 1994. Even back then, he already knew about the possibilities of the internet, and it was sort of a glimpse of things to come.
It was also a brilliant reflection of what was going on in society and in pop culture and of course his own universe ( see Days Of Wild , a modern day Sign Of The Times, just angrier ) , race relations post the LA riots and OJ Simpson and Rodney King ( see the song Race), some contemporary RnB sounds ( Acknowledge Me, Mustang Mix etc.), and passion ( Shhh ) and of course the usual "freaky" songs such as Pheromone or Come. And it was a reminder of the past ( The Jam by GCS , or the blues in The Ride....before these two songs were played to death and before he even hooked up with Larry G.)

It´s a shame that most of his efforts were either not really fully planned out and a bit sketchy at best ( like Glam Slam Ulysees ) and that his WB feud kind of stopped a smooth development of a "concept" behind the Beautiful Experience /Come/ Gold trilogy.

All in all , the Beautiful Experience remains , IMO , as one of his most underrated films / projects to date and is a collection or showcase of very strong material with a very determined Prince..or <+o ...
Most of those songs sound much, much better live than in the studio, no other version of Days Of Wild or Now or Shhh ever came close to that power and that punch, least of all the circulating or officially released versions.

This was an amazing time for Prince. The Music was Amazingly exciting, and the imagery was hypnotizing. Great sense of discovery!

Yeah, I agree, "The Beautiful Experience" movie is extremely cool! I love these little underground movies that Prince makes, like "The Beautiful Experience," "The Undertaker," "3 Chains Of Gold," etc.

The performances on it are great...like "Interactive" and "Now." The video for "Race" is cool as hell. During this era, P. and the NPG were extremely creative with their whole look and fashion sense. And Mayte looks ridiculously hot throughout.

Question though....you guys mentioned "Days of Wild." I don't have them doing "Days of Wild" on my copy...are you sure about that? If so, when do they do it (in case I accidentally missed it)?

But yeah this movie is very cool, definitely worth checking out. I love the whole "Gold Experience" era of P.

Okay, back in the mid 90's I brought the 'Undertaker' video and the '3 chains of gold' video, but i never saw 'the beautiful experience' video in the stores - was this an official release and where can i get it from? - i've heard very little about this and never had a chance to see it but it sounds great. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The org fucked up my response to Emilio´s post. I´ll keep it short this time : There are actually TWO versions, one is edited, the other one is not. As far as I know, some TV stations edited it , for instance 3sat.

There was really no "purpose" 2 the video xcept 4 Prince tryin' 2 b a director again & also, as said b4, a hint at the possibilities the internet could offer in the coming years. The songs were already intended 4 Come & The Gold Experience at the time he made the video. It's interesting because the video songs were all credited 2 "prince" while Prince already knew that the ones that would end-up on Come would b credited 2 "Prince."

I agree, Prince was at his best in 1994.

Was Gold/Come supposed to be one big project or did he intend on releasing them separately (maybe he was trying to replicate the way Lovesexy/Black Album were linked)
I'm not sure what u mean by "linked": Lovesexy didn't exist when The Black Album was supposed 2 b released & Prince began 2 record Lovesexy the week after he decided 2 drop the Black Album so the 2 r only linked in that way that one replaced the other.
A lot of the Come & The Gold Experience songs were recorded in late 1992/early 1993 4 the Glam Slam Ulysses dance show that toured in 1993. Then he started 2 record a lot of new stuff in late 1993/early 1994 (most of the Ulysses songs were reworked in early 1994 2 fit with the new songs' sound.)
Actually, material that would end on many albums were recorded at the same time: Come, The Gold Experience, The Undertaker, Exodus, Child Of The Sun, The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale, Chaos & Disorder & many tracks that ended on Crystal Ball. All i know is that Prince wanted Warner 2 release Come & The Gold Experience at the same time: one being the last "Prince" album & the other being the 1st "prince" album, but WB didn't want 2 release 2 albums at the same time. There were rumors of a 2 or 3 CD-set back in early 1994 but i don't think Prince never really considered it. Come/Gold sessions included all the Come & Gold Experience tracks as well as Mad, Funky Design, Ripopgodazippa, Hide The Bone, Acknowledge Me, Strays Of The World, Love Sign, Calhoun Square & Interactive.

Funny, I just watched this last week.
It is one of my faves of Prince/<+o videos. I wish I has a good dvd quality version. My VHS tape is wearing thin from all the plays. Also mine is from a Japanese TV broadcast and is not edited (as far as I can tell).
I call this era the "lost years". P wasn't lost musically for sure, just commercially. WB record company fight and all.
Interesting also is how this era is now being remembered very fondly by P fans. I always loved this era but it seems his true fans were few and far between at this time, at least in the U.S.

Not quite true....there were some VHS tapes ( or even DVDs ?) of this for sale on the old NPGMC website but in comparatively poor quality and recorded from Japanese or maybe Korean TV.
I still have my recording from Premiere, something like our version of HBO.

The edited version ( which I also recorded from TV ) was shown on 3Sat, and Days Of Wild is missing. 3Sat always shortens their music programmes, they also shortened the Love 4 1 Another TV special ( which wasn´t as powerful as the Beautiful Experience movie ) and they edited the Sade concert down to 45 minutes...this is something they always seem to do, not really Prince´s fault I guess.

The Beautiful Experience is, IMO , better than the SOTT movie because most of the songs are really live, and the story makes more sense.
Very underrated project.

Yea I know. Not sure where to look though (don't post where wink ).
I should just buy one of those DVD/Vhs recorder transfer thingys and convert all my treasured tapes.

Actually, NPGMC(npgltd) sold copies of T.B.E. for about 2 days. People complained that the vhs copies were bootleg like and didn't include any artwork, so they pulled the VHS.

I love how these threads pop up every now and again...I truly, truly LOVE this "movie". One of my favorites to be sure. I have a copy which was taped off of Japanese television...and the entire show is intact...including the "Beautiful" video at the end. I remember it being up at the NPGMC...and missed it, presuming, wrongly obviously, that it would be there longer, or perhaps, there would be a DVD copy.

As 4 the purpose of this film...I do believe there was a rhyme and reason 2 Prince's plan. Actually...from my understanding...the intent was 2 have the "Beautiful Experience" sold on Valentine's Day (presuming '94...that is SOOOO long ago biggrin ) and it was, in fact, set up and displayed at the Uptown NPG Store in MPLS. Warner's did not like the idea of this release...and it was packed up and put away...never to be, truly, officially released on video/dvd. There were quite a few countries that actually broadcast this program (source: NPG Magazine)...so it was "officially" released in that manner...much like the VH-1 program, which was also a nice production. This was a cool era...and I still love the music from Come/Gold...as well as the vibe of that era...NPG Stores...parties at the Park...and soooo much music and film! I hope this helps...Peace & B Wild!
